The Manship Artists Residency is proud to present\u00a0Hockney Reproduction(s)<\/a>, an exhibition examining one of the most influential artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, David Hockney (1937-2026). The exhibition explores Hockney\u2019s six-decade fascination with reproducing, reimagining, transmitting, and sharing his work through emerging technologies. With prints, books, multi-page faxes, photographs, and over 90 posters, the show reveals how reproduction served as a central force that shaped the artist\u2019s practice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in printing as a medium and also as a medium through which my work can be known \u2014 can reach a public. So, I\u2019ve taken an interest in any technology to do with image-making: printing, cameras, reproduction itself. Lots of artists aren\u2019t interested\u2026but I am interested.\u201d\u2014David Hockney\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hockney Reproduction(s)\u00a0brings together works from the collection of Bing McGilvray, other private collectors, and generous contributions from the David Hockney Foundation (UK), Salts Mill, Yorkshire, UK; and other friends. The exhibition reveals Hockney\u2019s playful and persistent engagement with technologies ranging from photocopiers and fax machines to computers, iPhones, iPads, and multi-screen videos.<\/p>\n

While Hockney is celebrated internationally for his paintings and drawings, this exhibition argues that reproduction was a through-line in his artistic life. He embraced new technologies not as replacements for traditional media but as opportunities to see differently, communicate in new ways, and reach a growing audience.<\/p>\n

The exhibition was conceived and implemented by 2025 Manship Resident Artist Bing McGilvray, an artist, curator, writer, and Hockney\u2019s friend of more than forty-five years. \u201cDavid was endlessly curious,\u201d says McGilvray. \u201cWhenever a new technology appeared, he wasn\u2019t interested in whether it was fashionable, he wanted to know what it could do visually. He saw uses for new technology that the inventors could not have imagined.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hockney Reproduction(s) will be open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (1PM \u2013 5PM), from September 11 to October 18. Tickets for timed entry to the exhibition are available on the Manship Artists Residency website<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
