{"id":624611,"date":"2026-09-14T18:32:16","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T18:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/624611\/"},"modified":"2026-09-14T18:32:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T18:32:16","slug":"irelands-volume-of-rail-freight-the-lowest-in-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/624611\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland&#8217;s volume of rail freight the lowest in the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to transporting goods by train, Ireland is falling behind its European peers.<\/p>\n<p>According to Eurostat&#8217;s latest data on rail freight transport, published today, only 0.03 tonnes per capita are transported that way here.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison Austria&#8217;s volume of rail freight transported last year was 10 tonnes per capita.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rail freight per capita 2025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/0025028e-614.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ireland has also seen a sharp drop in rail freight transport between 2024 and 2025 &#8211; by more than 35%.<\/p>\n<p>There was a decline across in the use of railway for transporting goods across the EU.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"change-rail-freight-transport-2024-2025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/0025028f-614.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The bloc&#8217;s overall performance fell by 1.8% to 368.2 tonne-kilometres in 2025 compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Germany remained by far the largest contributor to rail freight transport performance in the EU, with one third of the EU total.<\/p>\n<p>It is followed by Poland and France.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann&#8217;s Rail Freight 2040 Strategy, it wants to connect the country&#8217;s ports and increase the market share of rail freight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When it comes to transporting goods by train, Ireland is falling behind its European peers.
