ANN ARBOR, Mich. \u2013 One of North America\u2019s only remaining megafauna species is living between U.S. 23 and M-14.<\/p>\n
A herd of about 80 bison is turning heads at Domino\u2019s Farms in Ann Arbor Township.<\/p>\n
These powerful animals are more than just a striking sight. They\u2019re part of the farm\u2019s history and its connection to Michigan agriculture.<\/p>\n
Bison are one of the most important animals in American history. They\u2019re up there with glaciers in terms of how America was formed.<\/p>\n
But seriously, though, you have these herds of creatures that weigh thousands of pounds each. Their hooves dig up the dirt. They eat the weeds and fertilize the soil.<\/p>\n
American agriculture wouldn\u2019t have developed the same way if bison hadn\u2019t helped develop the soil.<\/p>\n
Two hundred years ago, there were an estimated 30 million to 60 million bison in North America.<\/p>\n
Those numbers were driven to near extinction. By 1890, it\u2019s estimated there were fewer than 1,000.<\/p>\n
Conservation efforts helped save the species. Today, bison are recovering through conservation partnerships and tribal-led restoration efforts.<\/p>\n
And there are dozens of them just hanging out outside Domino Farms.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not just survival. It\u2019s a symbol of what we\u2019ve almost lost and what we\u2019ve been able to recover.<\/p>\n
