{"id":625125,"date":"2026-09-15T06:36:19","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T06:36:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/625125\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T06:36:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T06:36:19","slug":"seven-gardai-dismissed-from-their-posts-so-far-this-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/625125\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven garda\u00ed dismissed from their posts so far this year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Seven garda\u00ed have been dismissed from their posts or have resigned in lieu of dismissal so far this year \u2013 more than in the previous three years combined. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a written reply to a parliamentary question, Minister for Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\">Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> said a garda and two probationer garda\u00ed had been dismissed, and that four garda\u00ed had resigned in lieu of dismissal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This compared to five dismissals in the prior three years, which included two resignations in lieu of dismissal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/independent-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/independent-ireland\/\">Independent Ireland<\/a> TD Ken O\u2019Flynn, the Minister said there were two dismissals last year, one being a garda and the other a probationer garda. There were three effective dismissals in 2024 and two resignations in lieu of dismissal. No dismissals were recorded in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The figures show that 12 garda\u00ed have left the force so far this year due to a medical discharge, with 21 such cases recorded in each of the previous two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">To date this year, 125 garda\u00ed have retired voluntarily, with 204 retirements recorded in the whole of last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Callaghan told O\u2019Flynn that 567 new garda\u00ed had attested between January 1st and July 24th this year, with the \u201ctotal sworn strength of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/a>\u201d increasing from 14,425 to 14,725 during that period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/09\/14\/victims-less-likely-to-report-crime-over-perceived-lack-of-garda-response-cso-finds\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crime reporting falls as public lose confidence in garda\u00edOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The strength of the force increased this year by a net figure of 300, with 267 departures having happened during the same period through retirements, resignations, medical discharge and dismissals. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSignificant measures have been introduced to boost recruitment and retention, including increasing the Garda trainee allowance, increasing the age of entry from 35 to 50, and raising the mandatory retirement age to 62,\u201d the Minister said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In an attempt to boost recruitment, An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na on Monday published a \u20ac4 million tender for a Managed Service Provider (MSP) for recruitment services. The contract runs for two years, with possible extensions for a further two years. The tender states that the Garda has an ambitious strategy to deliver additional permanent and specified purpose posts across all categories and grades of staff. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The tender states that these new posts will commence from the first quarter of next year, with a focus on early delivery of a large portion of the required additional staff to align with the recruitment plan.
