QUIRKY HORROR SERIES \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d cleaned up at Monday\u2019s Emmys, setting a new record for the most awards won by a comedy in a single year, as gritty hospital show \u201cThe Pitt\u201d won again for best drama.<\/p>\n

Apple TV\u2019s \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay,\u201d which stars Matthew Rhys as the leader of an isolated New England island that appears to be haunted, emerged as one of the most talked-about debut series of the year, and now has the trophies to back up the buzz.<\/p>\n

With 14 total awards, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d bested the previous record for a comedy set just last year by Seth Rogen\u2019s Hollywood satire \u201cThe Studio,\u201d also from Apple.<\/p>\n

Rhys, Kate O\u2019Flynn and Stephen Root all claimed acting prizes for their roles in the hit show.<\/p>\n

Rhys \u2013 a winner for best drama actor for \u201cThe Americans\u201d in 2018 \u2013 earned his first comedy Emmy and also triumphed as lead actor in a limited series for his sinister turn in \u201cThe Beast in Me.\u201d He earned the best comedy series prize in his role as producer.<\/p>\n

The strong night for \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d meant disappointment for \u201cHacks,\u201d the already decorated tale of a stand-up comedian trying to revive her career and the dysfunctional millennial assistant who helps her.<\/p>\n

But its star Jean Smart repeated as best comedy actress \u2013 her fifth award for the series in as many seasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a ride this has been!\u201d Smart said.<\/p>\n

The win was her eighth acting Emmy, tying her with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman for the most ever by a performer.<\/p>\n

Minutes later, Allison Janney equalled the record with her win for best drama supporting actress for \u201cThe Diplomat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Host Mariska Hargitay, the \u201cLaw and Order: SVU\u201d star, opened the gala with song and dance, belting out a \u201cI Love TV Screens\u201d parody of Joan Jett\u2019s classic \u201cI Love Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she recruited her superstar friends to do pre-taped segments, including New York Knicks basketball champion Jalen Brunson and none other than Taylor Swift.<\/p>\n

The pop titan\u2019s taped sketch drew laughs for its insider industry jokes.\n<\/p>\n

\u2018The Pitt\u2019 repeats as best drama<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pitt\u201d won its second consecutive Emmy for best drama.<\/p>\n

The smash series follows stressed workers in a Pittsburgh emergency room, with each episode unfolding in real time.<\/p>\n

Tackling everything from abortion rights to immigration crackdowns to mass shootings, the hit had led all shows with 25 nominations, and clocked six statuettes by night\u2019s close.<\/p>\n

Star Noah Wyle, who has racked up many awards for his leading role, won his second straight acting prize, and took home another statuette for best series as one of its producers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up in LA. I\u2019m a Hollywood kid. I was raised on a television, and movie theaters were my place of worship. This is all I\u2019ve ever wanted to do and this is the only club I\u2019ve ever wanted to join. Thank you for accepting me,\u201d Wyle told the audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cPluribus\u201d star Rhea Seehorn nabbed the statuette for best actress in a drama.<\/p>\n

HBO Max\u2019s \u201cDTF St Louis\u201d \u2013 the tale of a middle-aged love triangle gone wrong \u2013 won the night\u2019s top limited series prize, bringing its total to seven.<\/p>\n

And Sally Field notched the award for best actress in a limited series or television movie, for her turn in \u201cRemarkably Bright Creatures.\u201d<\/p>\n

The beloved performer gave a fiery speech that offered thinly veiled criticism of efforts to merge Paramount and Warner Bros.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur diversity, our unique storytelling matters. We can\u2019t let those voices be silenced or compromised or merged,\u201d Field said.<\/p>\n

Dolly tribute\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 78th Emmy Awards gala featured a tribute to late country music icon Dolly Parton, who was also an Emmy winner.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was genuine and humble, supportive and blisteringly funny,\u201d said Field, her co-star in the film \u201cSteel Magnolias,\u201d who then introduced country singer Reba McEntire to sing \u201cAppalachian Memories.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Noah Kahan sang \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water\u201d during the broadcast\u2019s In Memoriam segment, which included a heartfelt remembrance of Catherine O\u2019Hara including an onstage appearance by Macaulay Culkin, her co-star in the \u201cHome Alone\u201d movies, and her \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek\u201d castmates Annie Murphy and Dan Levy.<\/p>\n

Jamie Lee Curtis delivered a tearful homage to Rob Reiner, calling the late filmmaker and actor \u2013 who won a posthumous Emmy for a guest spot on \u201cThe Bear\u201d” \u2013 \u201cgenerous and kind and funny as hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

The gala was heavy on TV nostalgia, with \u201cBuffy the Vampire Slayer\u201d stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz and \u201cCharlie\u2019s Angels\u201d legends Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd, and Jaclyn Smith among the presenters.<\/p>\n
