\u201cWhy didn\u2019t they consider the health of the other competitors and the public?\u201d said one user on Chinese social media network Weibo.<\/p>\n
\u201cA foreign athlete suffered from diarrhoea, soiled the course and won anyway,\u201d said another angry user. \u201cIt\u2019s pro-foreigner favouritism.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Instagram, another user said: \u201cHyrox should have immediately stopped her when it happened. There are no blurred lines here. There was feces visibly running down her legs. At that point, the competition should have been over for her.<\/p>\n
They added that \u201cshe should have had the common courtesy to stop herself and get off the course.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t about embarrassing or shaming someone for having an accident. Accidents happen. It\u2019s about basic hygiene, sanitation, and respect for every other competitor on that course.\u201d<\/p>\n
Moristz F\u00fcrst, co-founder of Hyrox, apologised on social media, saying that they had \u201cmade a mistake\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI apologise to all that were directly or indirectly affected, as well as those who felt that we did not handle the situation like we should have,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cHyrox made a mistake by not reacting immediately during the race.\u201d<\/p>\n
He accepted responsibility for failing to foresee the incident and said there were \u201cnew rules and procedures in place\u201d to \u201cprevent situations like this from happening again\u201d.<\/p>\n
Hyrox said they have \u201cclear biocontaminant and medical procedures in place\u201d.<\/p>\n
However, they said on social media that \u201can unforeseen situation arose in which protocols designed for elite competition and mass participation became blurred, creating ambiguity in how they were applied and understood.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no place in our community for threats of violence or encouragement to harm an athlete,\u201d the statement added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Hyrox competitions have become a global phenomenon, which see athletes compete in a mix of endurance exercises, including running and strength training.<\/p>\n
Each competition is standardised and involves exactly the same course and exercises. Launched in Germany in 2017, the competition has spread across the world, with millions partaking every year.<\/p>\n
Its popularity has exploded in China in recent years.<\/p>\n
Hyrox China did not apologise but admitted in an earlier statement to \u201cshortcomings\u201d in the regulations which had prevented judges from intervening immediately during the competition.<\/p>\n
