Sept 14 (Reuters) – Elon Musk’s \u2060X Corp andSpaceXAI said on Monday they have resolved their claims against Apple \u2060in a lawsuit that alleged the iPhone maker conspired with OpenAI tounlawfully monopolize markets \u200cfor smartphones and generative AI chatbots.<\/p>\n
In a court filing, X andSpaceXAI, a division of SpaceX,moved to dismiss the claims in a lawsuit they brought against Apple and OpenAI last year. The filing did not explain the reasons for \u200bdismissal or say whether a settlement had been reached.<\/p>\n
The resolution \u2060ends a high-profile legal battle between Musk \u2060and one of the world’s most valuable companies over control of the fast-growing AI chatbot \u2060market, \u200cthough the claims against OpenAI will continue.<\/p>\n
The lawsuitclaimed Apple violated antitrust law by exclusively integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence features on iPhones and other Apple devices. It alleged \u2060Apple had illegally shut out rivals in its partnership withOpenAI.<\/p>\n
X \u200band SpaceXAI said they will \u200ccontinue to pursue claims againstOpenAI, which is also a defendant in the lawsuit.<\/p>\n
Musk’s companies \u2060did not immediately \u200brespond to requests for comment, and neither did Apple and OpenAI.<\/p>\n
OpenAI in a court filing on Monday said it was not involved in the agreement and did not know the terms. It said it has \u2060asked X to make the agreement available, saying it \u200bwould likely affect the claims in the lawsuit andOpenAI’s defense.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit alleged that Apple and OpenAI”locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing.” A judge \u2060ruled in November that the case could move forward,in a preliminary victory for Musk.<\/p>\n
OpenAI and Apple have both denied any wrongdoing. OpenAI in a court filing accused Musk of waging “a campaign of lawfare” against it. Apple, in seeking dismissal of the lawsuit, said its OpenAI integration on iPhones \u200bis not exclusive.<\/p>\n
In May,OpenAI defeated a separate lawsuit by Musk that \u2060accused the companyof straying from its original mission to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of \u200bhumanity and not for profit.<\/p>\n
OpenAI’s ChatGPT becamethe fastest-growing consumer application \u200cin history in the months following its launch \u200bin late 2022. Musk’s xAI acquired X last year for $33 billion to enhance itschatbot training capabilities.<\/p>\n
