{"id":625801,"date":"2026-09-15T23:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T23:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/625801\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T23:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T23:14:13","slug":"cork-hospital-becomes-one-of-the-first-to-tackle-heart-condition-with-new-dual-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/625801\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork hospital becomes one of the first to tackle heart condition with new dual treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">A Cork hospital has become one of the first in Ireland to treat abnormal heart rhythms with a new dual treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Mater Private Network Cork introduced the new procedure \u2014 called \u2018dual energy ablation\u2019 \u2014 just months after it was first successfully used to treat abnormal heart rhythms in a human in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Abnormal heart rhythms, also known as ventricular arrhythmias, arise in the lower chambers of the heart and, in serious cases, can lead to cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The introduction of the procedure at the Mahon-based hospital makes the facility an early adopter of the emerging approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Abnormal heart rhythms can be difficult to treat because the abnormal electrical signals may originate deep within the heart muscle, or other challenging locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Radiofrequency (RF) ablation, which uses heat to target the tissue causing the abnormal rhythm, is an established treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Dual energy ablation allows cardiologists to switch between radiofrequency and pulsed field energy during the same procedure, rather than relying on a single type of energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Dr Pauriah of Mater Private Cork said ventricular arrhythmias can be among the more challenging heart rhythm disorders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThe abnormal electrical activity can come from different areas of the heart and the best approach can depend on the location and type of tissue we are treating,\u201d said Dr Pauriah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cHaving two forms of energy available means we can choose the approach best suited to what we find.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cFor patients, it gives us more options when treating these complex heart rhythms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt also means selected patients can access this specialist treatment in Cork rather than travelling further afield or overseas for care.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Cork hospital has become one of the first in Ireland to treat abnormal heart rhythms with a&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":625802,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[33970,103,61,60],"class_list":["post-625801","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-health-body","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/625801","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=625801"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/625801\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/625802"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=625801"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=625801"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=625801"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
