An example is today\u2019s composite images of<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/science\/explore-the-night-sky\/hubble-messier-catalog\/messier-64\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Messier 64<\/a> (M64),<br \/>\na nearby<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/galaxies\/types\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spiral galaxy<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Eye_Galaxy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of many names<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe dark band of<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfa.harvard.edu\/news\/dust-galaxy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dust<\/a><br \/>\npartially blocking its bright core earned it the moniker<br \/>\n\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap230720.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Black Eye Galaxy<\/a>.\u201d<br \/>\nWebb\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jwst-docs.stsci.edu\/jwst-mid-infrared-instrument\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mid-InfraRed Instrument<\/a> (MIRI)<br \/>\nsees that dust, shown in red, as it absorbs and re-emits light from surrounding newborn stars.<br \/>\nThese young stars are embedded in pink star-forming regions in the secondary Hubble-only image.<br \/>\nM64\u2019s inner and outer gas regions<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/1992Natur.360..442B\/abstract\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">counter-rotate<\/a>,<br \/>\ncreating regions of increased star formation where the two gas \u201ccurrents\u201d meet and compress.<br \/>\nA merger between M64 and a smaller galaxy was likely the cause of the opposing motion of the<br \/>\nouter gas. Spiral galaxies were once thought to have peaceful histories.<br \/>\nM64 was key evidence that spiral galaxies, including the<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/astrobites.org\/2019\/03\/12\/hunting-for-stellar-streams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a>,<br \/>\ncan and do experience mergers.
