The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has warned the public of online scams impersonating Dublin Zoo and offering free gifts.<\/p>\n

The social media posts appear with images or videos featuring fake Dublin Zoo-branded content, the CCPC said.<\/p>\n

Some of these posts offer free gifts or back-to-school packs with consumers then asked to pay \u20ac2-3 postage.<\/p>\n

Dublin Zoo brought the social media posts and fraudulent website links to the CCPC’s attention.<\/p>\n

The CCPC’s Director for Communications Aoibh\u00edn de B\u00farca said scammers “are getting smarter every day”.<\/p>\n

“They are taking advantage of busy consumers and using established businesses with recognisable branding to create fake social media ads and clone websites.<\/p>\n

“We know it is getting harder to spot scams online, which is why pausing before you hit pay is more important than ever.<\/p>\n

“Do not click on social media ads directly or enter payment details without doing a thorough search to make sure you’re on an authentic website,” said Ms de B\u00farca.<\/p>\n

She added: “Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”<\/p>\n

The CCPC advised people who think they have been scammed to contact their bank immediately.<\/p>\n

“You may be able to initiate a chargeback and get your money back, and you may need to freeze your card to prevent further money being taken.
