Matthew Lillard<\/a> isn\u2019t in love with the shape of himself. Reflecting on the current political landscape (and Ed Sheeran<\/a>), Lillard said he was \u201cashamed\u201d of returning for Scream 7<\/a> after the firing of Melissa Barrera<\/a>. At an Austin screening of Scream, Lillard was asked about the difficulty of speaking out about political issues as a public figure. \u201cI don\u2019t know how else to do it,\u201d Lillard said. \u201cFor me, I have queer kids. If I\u2019m not standing up for queer kids or kids in the trans community then what the fuck am I doing? If I\u2019m not standing up against ICE<\/a>, then what the fuck am I doing?\u201d Lillard then pivoted to holding himself accountable for a time he didn\u2019t stand up: reprising the role of Stu Macher in Scream 7 after Barrera was fired for speaking out against the genocide in Gaza. \u201cIt\u2019s really fucking bullshit and really hard and she\u2019s on the right side of history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen that happened to Melissa, the whole world didn\u2019t pipe up,\u201d he said. \u201cBut she was a year early on what the fuck\u2019s going on. But the whole world should have popped up and said, \u2018She\u2019s right.\u2019 And they didn\u2019t. And that\u2019s brutal.\u201d Lillard counted himself among those who didn\u2019t pipe up. \u201cI went back to do Scream, and I got called out. And I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, fuck,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI feel bad about that. I feel ashamed about that. Because in that moment I was so excited to go back, I didn\u2019t really think about Melissa and that journey. I didn\u2019t say no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI blew that,\u201d Lillard said. \u201cI\u2019m on the wrong side of history for that. I still like being in the movie [but] it may not have been the best idea.\u201d And as we\u2019re all learning in real time, not speaking out has consequences as well. \u201cLook at what\u2019s going on with Ed Sheeran right now,\u201d Lillard said. \u201cIt\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n
