The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/webb-opens-treasure-chest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">featured image<\/a> was obtained with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/webb\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> and shows a <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap260503.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dust pillar<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap170702.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carina Nebula<\/a> inside our <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/resource\/the-milky-way-galaxy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Galaxy<\/a>, roughly 7500 light-years away. It is formed by <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.swin.edu.au\/cosmos\/I\/interstellar+gas+cloud\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interstellar gas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/glossary\/#cosmic-dust\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dust<\/a>, and shaped by powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap250203.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stellar winds and radiation<\/a> from neighboring stars like the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap230709.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eta Carinae<\/a> stellar system which is more luminous than 5 million suns. The star formation inside the pillar is excavating its head, creating the open lid of the chest. Astronomers estimate that there are about 70 stars in a <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1086\/427249\/pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">compact cluster<\/a> inside the pillar. This cluster is now thought to be only around <a href=\"https:\/\/esawebb.org\/images\/potm2607a\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1.3 million years old<\/a>. Its bounty of young stars includes a massive star approximately 19 times as massive as the Sun. More massive <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/stars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a> are rarer, shine brighter and evolve faster than less massive stars.
