\nPrime Minister Ulf Kristersson has announced his resignation<\/p>\n
Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will resign after losing the country’s parliamentary election, he said following the announcement of a final vote count.<\/p>\n
Centre-left opposition parties won 176 seats in Sunday’s vote for parliament while Kristersson’s ruling right-wing bloc secured 173 seats, the election authority said earlier as the counting of ballots ended.<\/p>\n
“Now it is the speaker who will lead the next stage of the way to a new government. I am herewith requesting that I be relieved of the office of prime minister to allow that work to start immediately,” Mr Kristersson said in a letter posted on social media X.<\/p>\n
The four parties in the left-wing bloc, led by Magdalena Andersson’s Social Democrats, hold a slim majority in the 349-seat parliament over outgoing prime minister Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing alliance, which includes the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats.<\/p>\n
But only around 50,000 votes separated the two sides in the country of 10.6 million people.<\/p>\n
Ms Andersson vowed today to lead the country in a “new direction” after four years of right-wing rule backed by the far-right.<\/p>\n
“The Swedish people have voted for a new direction for our country. Voted for unity and against division. The Swedish people have voted to move Sweden forward, and I want to realise the new direction that you have voted for,” she said in a speech posted on social media.<\/p>\n
With the opposition deeply splintered over ideological differences, Ms Andersson’s negotiating skills will be put to the test to unite the bloc, made up of the Social Democrats, the Left Party, the Greens Party and the Centre Party.<\/p>\n
The 59-year-old was Sweden’s first woman prime minister in 2021-2022 and finance minister for seven years before that, and is known as a hard-nosed technocrat with a direct and no-nonsense style.<\/p>\n
Negotiations could drag on for weeks with Ms Andersson needing to find a path to reconcile differences between the socialist Left Party and the liberal Centre Party.<\/p>\n
The Centre Party has said it will oppose a government that includes cabinet posts for the Left Party, which has insisted on having a minister.<\/p>\n

Ms Andersson has previously ruled out a government that includes the Left Party, but wants their support in parliament.<\/p>\n
On Sunday’s election night, Ms Andersson already declared that if the result held “Sweden will have a new government”.<\/p>\n
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, heading one of the few left-wing governments in Europe, hailed the win.<\/p>\n
“Social democracy has won the elections in Sweden. After four years of a right-wing government with the far right, the Swedes are once again backing the welfare state, social justice and the green agenda,” Mr Sanchez said in a post to X.<\/p>\n
Parliament can vote on a new prime minister on 29 September at the earliest.<\/p>\n
Centre as kingmaker<\/p>\n
Mr Kristersson resigned after the results were announced, allowing the parliament speaker to initiate talks with party leaders to appoint one to form a government.<\/p>\n
He said on election night that he would respect Ms Andersson’s attempts to form a government, but wished her “good luck” given the divisions among her left-wing bloc.<\/p>\n
He said he was ready to explore options to find a majority among “non-socialist” parties.<\/p>\n
He is seen as wanting to woo the Centre Party – which used to belong to the right-wing bloc – though it is staunchly opposed to a government which includes the Sweden Democrats.<\/p>\n
Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist on election night stressed the party had “been clear that we are going into the election on the basis that the extremes should not dominate a government”.<\/p>\n
The Social Democrats – which ruled the Scandinavian country for most of the 20th century and remains Sweden’s largest party – also looked to be heading for their worst score in over a century with 28% of the vote.<\/p>\n
