{"id":627840,"date":"2026-09-17T20:46:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T20:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/627840\/"},"modified":"2026-09-17T20:46:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T20:46:20","slug":"record-influx-of-university-graduates-pushes-chinas-youth-unemployment-rate-to-18-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/627840\/","title":{"rendered":"Record influx of university graduates pushes China\u2019s youth unemployment rate to 18.9%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">China\u2019s urban youth unemployment rose last month, as a record influx of university graduates struggles to find work in a job market weighed down by weak domestic demand and the growing adoption of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The jobless rate for those aged 16 to 24, excluding students, rose to 18.9 per cent in August from 17.9 per cent in July, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This figure, as well as the identical number from August last year, represents the highest reading since Beijing revised its calculation methodology to exclude students in 2023, following a peak of 21.3 per cent under the old rubric reported in June of that year.<\/p>\n<p>A record 12.7 million university students were <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3333652\/china-braces-record-127-million-graduates-entering-tight-job-market-2026?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimated to have graduated<\/a> this summer, entering a labour market already weakened by slowing economic momentum.
