The planetary infant is less than 1 million years old and could help researchers study how other planets, including our own, took shape.<\/p>\n<p>The juvenile world, dubbed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.exoplanet.eu\/catalog\/elias_2_24_b--9395\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.exoplanet.eu\/catalog\/elias_2_24_b--9395\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Elias 2-24 b<\/a>, orbits a newly formed star around 450 light-years from Earth. It is somewhere between two and four times as massive as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/jupiter\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/jupiter\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/jupiter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> and almost twice as far from its home star as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/neptune\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/neptune\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/neptune\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neptune<\/a> is from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/the-sun\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/the-sun\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/the-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-aac2e736-b2ba-11f1-8155-2597ca6e7f01-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Astronomers spotted initial signs of the hefty exoplanet <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/aa9b7b\/meta\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/aa9b7b\/meta\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in 2017<\/a>, when they noticed a small gap in the star&#8217;s protoplanetary disk \u2014 the swirling ring of gas, dust and other stellar debris left over from the star&#8217;s creation. This gap strongly implied that an exoplanet had formed there after enough of the disk&#8217;s spinning material had gravitationally clumped together, the process by which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/in-a-cosmic-first-astronomers-spot-a-new-planet-system-being-born-around-an-alien-star\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/in-a-cosmic-first-astronomers-spot-a-new-planet-system-being-born-around-an-alien-star\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/in-a-cosmic-first-astronomers-spot-a-new-planet-system-being-born-around-an-alien-star\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most planets form<\/a>. However, the alien world was not directly visible at the time.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4a90349e-b2bb-11f1-b140-7fc7d199359c\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">In the new study, published Sept. 16 in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/ae9bb6\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/ae9bb6\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Astrophysical Journal Letters<\/a>, researchers combined observations from three telescopes \u2014 the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, the Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array in Chile and the European Southern Observatory\u2019s Very Large Telescope, also in Chile \u2014 to take a closer look at the gap in the protoplanetary disk. Compared to the average human lifespan, this makes Elias 2-2 b roughly equivalent to a two- or three-day-old baby.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4a9035ca-b2bb-11f1-9fee-691015a20a88\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/>Record setter<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4a90362e-b2bb-11f1-a856-339d18c0c301\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">This is not the first time that astronomers have spotted baby exoplanets. But until recently, there has been an age limit on when they become visible to us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">For a long time, the youngest-known exoplanets, which included <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/exoplanets\/like-a-family-photo-of-our-solar-system-the-james-webb-telescope-is-watching-2-alien-planets-being-born-before-our-eyes\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/exoplanets\/like-a-family-photo-of-our-solar-system-the-james-webb-telescope-is-watching-2-alien-planets-being-born-before-our-eyes\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/exoplanets\/like-a-family-photo-of-our-solar-system-the-james-webb-telescope-is-watching-2-alien-planets-being-born-before-our-eyes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several worlds orbiting the star PDS 70<\/a>, were around 5 million years old. This is because telescopes were not powerful enough to spot exoplanets until they had cleared a large enough gap in their star&#8217;s protoplanetary disks. But this doesn&#8217;t work with protoplanetary disks.<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: NASA\/SDO\/AIA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4a903868-b2bb-11f1-94bd-81d34938fe45\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The only way to spot a juvenile exoplanet is if a star&#8217;s protoplanetary disk is perpendicular to Earth, so that we are looking at it <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/exoplanets\/james-webb-telescope-discovers-its-first-planet-a-saturn-size-shepherd-still-glowing-red-hot-from-its-formation\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/exoplanets\/james-webb-telescope-discovers-its-first-planet-a-saturn-size-shepherd-still-glowing-red-hot-from-its-formation\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/exoplanets\/james-webb-telescope-discovers-its-first-planet-a-saturn-size-shepherd-still-glowing-red-hot-from-its-formation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from the top down or bottom up<\/a> and can clearly see any gaps within it. But this is much harder because the light from the star often outshines the disks, meaning we are &#8220;mostly blind to these baby planets right now,&#8221; Cieza said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9b2ed5da-b2bc-11f1-945f-7f3c28299243\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">However, this could change thanks to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s soon-to-be-operational Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasas-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope-is-set-to-launch-this-weekend-when-will-we-see-its-first-photos\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasas-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope-is-set-to-launch-this-weekend-when-will-we-see-its-first-photos\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasas-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope-is-set-to-launch-this-weekend-when-will-we-see-its-first-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched into space Aug. 30<\/a> and is currently calibrating its instruments before beginning its potentially decades-long mission to observe the cosmos. The space telescope is equipped with a state-of-the-art starshade, or coronagraph, which blocks out the light from distant stars, making it easier to study their surroundings.
