{"id":628426,"date":"2026-09-18T10:10:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-18T10:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/628426\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T10:10:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T10:10:13","slug":"corporation-tax-to-exceed-e35-3bn-forecast-by-a-wide-margin-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/628426\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporation tax to exceed \u20ac35.3bn forecast by a wide margin \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government is set to receive a pre-budget boost to the public finances after signals from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-finance\/\">Department of Finance<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/corporation-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/corporation-tax\/\">corporation tax<\/a> returns will beat already elevated forecasts for this year and in 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The improving outlook may yet increase scope for new spending and tax measures for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/budget\/\">Budget 2027<\/a> next month. But there is concern within the Coalition about the potential for the new figures to stir political pressure to increase the \u20ac8.5 billion budget package. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Increasing corporation tax revenues have strengthened the public finances but they have led to a cascade of warnings that the State\u2019s reliance on money from a small number of large companies is very risky. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Receipts from the tax have more than doubled since 2020, with three companies \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eli-lilly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eli-lilly\/\">Eli Lilly<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a> \u2013 accounting for almost half the total return in 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Confidential figures prepared for meetings this week between Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin and T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris suggest 2026 receipts from the tax on business profits will exceed the Department\u2019s \u20ac35.3 billion April forecast by a wide margin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The eventual 2026 return will be baked into the 2027 forecast, prompting signals that the projected \u20ac37.4 billion return next year will also be eclipsed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new figures have been described as \u201chighly sensitive\u201d because of ongoing budget discussions within the Cabinet. Still, two people with knowledge of the talks said the likely return from the tax has improved appreciably. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The \u20ac8.5 billion package under discussion for weeks embraces \u20ac7 billion in additional spending and \u20ac1.5 billion in tax cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The expectation of an increased corporation tax return is based on an early assessment of payments into the exchequer since the start of September and an appraisal of returns in the first eight months of the year. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1789726213_769_1784803479672-9ae96ac7-c636-4bcb-998c-c0aedcc60931.jpeg\"\/>Soaring energy costs and why \u2018we can\u2019t protect everyone from the impact of war\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Finance declined to comment. Official forecasts from the department have not been updated since its \u201cannual progress report\u201d in April, which projected a \u20ac2.3 billion or 7.1 per cent increase in corporation tax receipts in 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Corporation tax returns to the end of August were already up by 8.3 per cent on 2025, climbing \u20ac1.4 billion to reach \u20ac17.8 billion. The return in the first eight months of the year includes \u20ac1.2 billion from the new 15 per cent \u201ctop-up tax\u201d for large companies, with further increases expected in coming months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A new forecast from the department will not be unveiled until budget day \u2013 October 6th \u2013 but Government officials are working on the basis that corporation tax projections for 2026 and 2027 will be revised upwards. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cStrong corporation tax receipts in September are likely the result of final top-up payments for companies with a 31st December 2025 year-end,\u201d said Peter Vale, head of Republic of Ireland tax at accountants Grant Thornton. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHowever, they could also signal positive projections for companies with year-ends in early 2027.
