Zack Snyder\u2019s promotional tour for his first independently produced feature, The Last Photograph<\/a>\u2014which has been taking a shellacking from critics since debuting at the Toronto Film Festival last week\u2014has been a fresh opportunity for the director to say things into microphones that excite and\/or bewilder those still invested in Zack Snyder\u2019s career. From insisting that he can\u2019t be a fascist because he made \u201cthe gayest movie ever made\u201d<\/a> to saying he wants to make a Dark Knight Returns movie<\/a> even though he\u2019s basically already made one<\/a>, Snyder just loves to ladle out sound bites for his adoring public. Now, amid renewed gripes from the peanut gallery that the director\u2019s work is fascist (or, at least, kinda fashy), Snyder reiterated his interest in adapting Ayn Rand\u2019s 1943 novel, The Fountainhead, during the Happy Sad Confused podcast <\/a>on Thursday, while noting there remains \u201cvery powerful, very wealthy\u201d interest in the novel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI have some ideas on how to make it. Strangely, there\u2019s a lot of very powerful, very wealthy people that like Fountainhead,\u201d Snyder told host Josh Horowitz. \u201cSo, you know, there\u2019s some places. There\u2019s some interest. Weirdly, I took it around, and it was interesting: I sold it to two companies and then, for whatever reason, they came back to me like a week later and were like, \u2018Oh, we can\u2019t do it.\u2019 I think they just [took] it up the flagpole and everyone was like, \u2018What? You\u2019re insane! We can\u2019t make Fountainhead. So, I\u2019m excited about that. That\u2019s a reason to make it right there.\u201d As to whether the wealthy, powerful people Snyder mentioned are genuine prospective supporters or just a fun bit of commentary\u2014and whether this \u201cinterest\u201d might one day translate into financing his project (or, indeed, influence a streamer or network to buy it)\u2014Snyder didn\u2019t say.<\/p>\n

The director has been eager to discuss making The Fountainhead for a decade. He revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in 2016<\/a> that he\u2019d been working on the adaptation, and told Horowitz this week that he started writing in 2018. In 2019, Snyder said the political climate might prompt audiences to reject his project, telling Cinema Debate <\/a>(formerly Comic Book Debate) that \u201cpeople will think [Fountainhead is] hardcore right-wing propaganda, but I don\u2019t view it like that. I just think the story is super fun and crazy and melodramatic about architecture and sex. It\u2019s about time we get a different president so we don\u2019t take shit so seriously!\u201d At any rate, a TV limited series appears to be the approach the Watchmen director wants to take with his Rand adaptation. \u201cI really feel like it\u2019s a good time for [it],\u201d he said, before laughing, \u201cI wish I had Fountainhead ready to release on the heels of [The Last Photograph]!\u201d Then the smile went away: \u201cI\u2019ve written it as a 12-part [limited series]. I\u2019ve written 10 of the 12 episodes.\u201d<\/p>\n
