It was the first time both the Earth and the moon were captured in a single frame.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Voyager 1 was 7.25 million miles (11.7 million kilometers) away from Earth. It launched about two weeks earlier on a mission to explore the outer planets.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b5b9034c-b377-11f1-a7f4-7953d0c9e06d-2\">Voyager 1 passed through the asteroid belt and visited <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> and Saturn. Then it took a sharp turn and started heading straight out of the plane of the solar system.<\/p>\n<p>Before Voyager 1 started heading toward interstellar space, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24970-carl-sagan-legacy-cosmos.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24970-carl-sagan-legacy-cosmos.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24970-carl-sagan-legacy-cosmos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carl Sagan<\/a> convinced NASA to turn its cameras around one last time to take a family portrait of all the planets in the solar system. This family portrait shows Earth as a tiny speck in a ray of sunshine. (Image credit: NASA\/JPL)<a id=\"elk-b5b9046e-b377-11f1-b3c0-6f0e59b67937\"\/>Why it mattered<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b5b904f0-b377-11f1-8ab8-ed3af298c76f\">This view of the Earth and moon together in one frame may seem grainy and unimpressive, but in 1977, the Voyager 1 photo was our glimpse of humanity&#8217;s place in the universe.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7c7424ce-b37a-11f1-b1cc-132639d60b43\">By 1977, NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo moon missions<\/a> were over and this photo captured in one view the only places humans have lived, worked or explored in the history of our species. It was a preview of sorts for another iconic photo by Voyager 1, the Pale Blue Dot. But we would have to wait until 1990 for that epic view, which showed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22047-earth-moon-photos-from-saturn-mercury.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22047-earth-moon-photos-from-saturn-mercury.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22047-earth-moon-photos-from-saturn-mercury.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth as seen from Saturn<\/a> \u2014 nearly 4 billion miles (6 billion km) away \u2014 as little more than a blue dot in a vast cosmos.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-cfa91f5c-b378-11f1-adae-ffae3b278e46\">Voyager 1 took this photo 13 days <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/on-this-day-in-space-sept-5-1977-nasa-launches-voyager-1-on-epic-journey-across-the-solar-system\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/on-this-day-in-space-sept-5-1977-nasa-launches-voyager-1-on-epic-journey-across-the-solar-system\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/on-this-day-in-space-sept-5-1977-nasa-launches-voyager-1-on-epic-journey-across-the-solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after its launch on Sept. 5, 1977<\/a>, but NASA did have to massage the final image to make the Earth and moon shine together.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-cfa91fc0-b378-11f1-b31e-29cb2d6ec270\">&#8220;Because the Earth is many times brighter than the Moon, the Moon was artificially brightened by a factor of three relative to the Earth by computer enhancement so that both bodies would show clearly in the print,&#8221; NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the still active Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia00013-crescent-earth-and-moon\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia00013-crescent-earth-and-moon\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">explained in a retrospective<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Voyager 1 is in interstellar space, and is the farthest object built by human hands from Earth. As of Sept. 18, 2026, Voyager 1 was about 15.98 billion miles (25.72 billion km) from Earth, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/voyager\/where-are-voyager-1-and-voyager-2-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/voyager\/where-are-voyager-1-and-voyager-2-now\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>. On Nov. 18, the spacecraft will make history as the first probe to reach a distance of one light-day from Earth. A light-day, the distance light travels in 24 hours, is16.094 billion miles (25.902 billion kilometers) from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Want more space history?
