Jessica Prothe, MSN, RN, of Northern Illinois University School of Nursing, and colleagues conducted the study and published their findings in Teaching and Learning in Nursing.<\/p>\n
Ms. Prothe and colleagues explained that inequities in breast cancer care that are experienced by Black women are \u201cdriven by complex structural, social, and clinical factors that shape access to high quality care.\u201d<\/p>\n
The study authors highlighted that oncology nursing education plays a key role in teaching nurses how to \u201crecognize and respond to the multilevel contributors that sustain these disparities.\u201d The 5W organizational tool includes five core questions\u2014Who, What, Where, When, and Why\u2014to analyze individual patient experiences and guide care decision-making.<\/p>\n
The authors performed a \u201ccomprehensive literature search\u201d to obtain evidence to inform the study, collecting data from CINAHL, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Medline. The search criteria included the following terms:<\/p>\n
\u201cAdvocacy,\u201d
\n\u201cNursing education,\u201d
\n\u201cEquity-focused teaching strategies,\u201d
\n\u201cNursing curriculum,\u201d
\n\u201cHealth equity,\u201d
\n\u201cOrganizational strategies,\u201d and
\n\u201c5W strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Upon data collection, \u201citerative refinement\u201d was employed to \u201censure inclusive coverage of the evidence base.\u201d<\/p>\n
Findings from the study determined that the 5W organizational tool was an optimal strategy that can be used to help oncology nurses implement and integrate \u201cequity-focused concepts across academic and clinical environments to strengthen equity-centered decision making.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms. Prothe and colleagues explained that leveraging the 5Ws in clinical practice helps oncology nurses assess gaps and barriers to breast cancer care, identify patients who are most affected by disparities in care, uncover what occurs as a result of these disparities, examine why inequities within this patient population persist, and \u00a0determine \u201cwhere nursing interventions can be implemented.\u201d<\/p>\n
Investigators also highlighted potential \u201cbarriers to implementation,\u201d which they wrote continue at the \u201cinterpersonal, cultural, institutional, and societal levels.\u201d They explained that persistent gaps and barriers to equitable breast cancer care emphasize the need for improvements in nursing education, including \u201cthe need for intentional curricular design, alignment with equity-focused competencies, and incorporation of policy-relevant content within nursing programs.\u201d<\/p>\n
