A MAN IN his 40s has been arrested in connection with the discovery of six people inside a lorry trailer at Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford yesterday.<\/p>\n
At around 5am on Thursday, garda\u00ed were alerted to the presence of six people in the trailer of a lorry that had docked at the port.<\/p>\n
All six, five adult men and one juvenile male, were taken to hospital for medical assessment.<\/p>\n
Two were refused permission to land, while the juvenile is said to be receiving appropriate supports.<\/p>\n
A 40-year-old man was today arrested in connection with the investigation. He is currently detained at a garda station in the Co Wexford area.\n<\/p>\n
\u2018Huge concern\u2019<\/p>\n
Ger Hyland is the president of the Irish Road Haulage Association.<\/p>\n
Speaking to RT\u00c9\u2019s News at One, he remarked that this is a \u201chuge issue\u201d for his members.<\/p>\n
However, he called on people to \u201cthink of the six migrants that came across in a steel container\u201d.<\/p>\n
Hyland noted that in many cases the \u201ccontainers are airtight\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat container could have sat in Zeebrugge (in Belgium) for two or three days before it was shipped across to Ireland,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt could sit on a quay in Ireland for two or three days before it\u2019s out for delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hyland then added: \u201cTake a thought for our drivers, who deliver these containers and when they open the back doors at their point of delivery, you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re going to find, so it is a huge concern for our members and our drivers\u201d.<\/p>\n
Hyland added that organised crime gangs are often involved in putting people in containers and that they often believe they are headed for England and are \u201csurprised\u201d to arrive in Ireland.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe criminal gangs putting these people in containers, they don\u2019t care where they go, what happens to them, so long as they get their money.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Hyland said his members have a \u201clist of checks\u201d when undertaking international work.<\/p>\n
However, he said there are times when drivers \u201cknow absolutely nothing until he hears the migrants banging on the side of the trailer when he gets to his destination\u201d.<\/p>\n
Hyland added that \u201cour operators are doing everything they can\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are desperate people out there,\u201d said Hyland, \u201cbut their final destination normally seems to be the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that to the \u201cbest of my knowledge, there is none of our operators involved in people smuggling\u201d.<\/p>\n
