Fifty-five baby loggerheads died on a Florida road in August, and every one of them was doing exactly what it was built to do.<\/p>\n
Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring reported that lighting from nearby homes and businesses pulled the hatchlings towards Gulf Drive instead of the Gulf. Weeks later, as reported by FOX 13 Tampa Bay<\/a>, more than 70 were rescued on the same island after crawling inland, with two others pulled from a swimming pool and a storm drain.<\/p>\n What a hatchling is actually doing when it runs<\/p>\n A loggerhead breaks out of the sand at night with no parent, no practice run and a shell small enough to sit in a cupped palm. Its entire sea-finding strategy is one instinct: move towards the brightest direction. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission explains that on a natural beach<\/a> this means the open view of night sky above the water, with the dune behind standing dark and silhouetted.<\/p>\n Moonlight has surprisingly little to do with it. The commission notes that sea-finding works at any phase and position of the moon, which tells you hatchlings aren\u2019t following lunar light at all. Brightness is relative. What matters is which way looks most open.<\/p>\n On an undeveloped coast, that instinct is close to unbeatable.<\/p>\n How long turtles have been running this beach<\/p>\n Long enough that the number stops meaning much.<\/p>\n Palaeontologists Edwin Cadena and James Parham described Desmatochelys padillai in PaleoBios<\/a>, a marine turtle close to two metres long, recovered from Cretaceous rock near Villa de Leyva in Colombia and dated to at least 120 million years. Parham told Live Science<\/a> the specimen looked highly specialised rather than primitive, which hints that older ones are still sitting in the ground somewhere.<\/p>\n Two magnetic senses, one of them recently pinned down<\/p>\n Adults cross ocean basins and return to nest in the region where they hatched, which takes a map as well as a compass. In February 2025, researchers led by Kayla Goforth and Kenneth Lohmann at UNC-Chapel Hill published evidence in Nature<\/a> that loggerheads can learn and remember the magnetic signature of a particular place, showing excited food-anticipation behaviour whenever a field they had been fed in was switched back on.<\/p>\n Lohmann said in the university\u2019s announcement<\/a> that telling magnetic fields apart probably explains how many species, not just turtles, reach specific destinations. A follow-up in the Journal of Experimental Biology<\/a> found that a brief, strong magnetic pulse blunted responses to a learned signature while leaving compass orientation intact, pointing to a physical, magnetite-based mechanism behind the map.<\/p>\n That map appears to shape where the species breeds. J. Roger Brothers and Lohmann matched 19 years of Florida nesting records against natural drift in the planet\u2019s field, and their results, covered by The Scientist<\/a> on publication in Current Biology, showed nesting clustering where the magnetic signatures of neighbouring beaches converged and thinning where they pulled apart.<\/p>\n These findings come from a single research group. That is how a field opens, not how it closes.<\/p>\n Why a porch light beats all of it<\/p>\n None of that machinery helps on the sand. Map and compass matter once a hatchling is swimming; getting to the water is done purely by eye. The commission\u2019s account of the failure comes down to glare. An artificial source sits close enough to look overwhelmingly bright without lifting the brightness of the sky or the landscape, so hatchlings disregard every other cue and go to it.<\/p>\n Spectrum compounds the problem. A systematic review of artificial light at night and hatchling dispersal<\/a> found consistent attraction to short-wavelength violet and blue light and avoidance of the amber and red end, which suits an animal whose visual system evolved for a blue-green underwater world.<\/p>\n The numbers on a developed coast<\/p>\n A Pinellas County analysis published in PLOS One<\/a> tracked 1,048 nests that produced hatchlings between 2018 and 2023. Of those emergences, 377 involved disorientation, or 36 per cent, with nests high on the beach faring measurably better than those in the middle. Statewide, the wildlife commission puts the toll in thousands of hatchling deaths a year.<\/p>\n Remedies are dull and cheap. An Australian field trial testing LED streetlights on nesting beaches<\/a> found a narrow-spectrum red light peaking at 625 nanometres left sea-finding undisturbed even at higher intensities, while broad-spectrum white lights did not. Shielding a fixture costs less than a dinner. Switching it off costs nothing.<\/p>\n Which leaves an odd scoreboard.
