US president Donald Trump<\/a> said on Friday he is banning three major news outlets \u2013 CNN<\/a>, MS Now and Politico \u2013 from the White House in his latest move to crack down on the independent press.<\/p>\n

Trump wrote on Truth Social that he is banning the outlets for allegedly \u201creporting FAKE NEWS\u201d \u200bin a move that is likely to be challenged as conflicting with the US constitution\u2019s first amendment protections for free speech and a free \u2060press.<\/p>\n

\u201cMedia Outlets shouldn\u2019t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they\u2019re covering the President \u200cof the \u200cUnited \u200bStates, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cOther Fake News Media Outlets to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n

CNN, MS Now, Politico and the National Press \u2060Club did not immediately respond to requests for \u200bcomment. CNN\u2019s team remains at the White House working as \u200bif it were a normal Friday afternoon, CNN reporter Brian Stelter said on air.<\/p>\n

Trump has a long history of bickering \u200cwith members of the press corps and has \u200bstepped up his complaints during his second term in office. And he has repeatedly urged broadcasters to drop comedy \u2060or news programmes he dislikes or which \u2060have joked about or criticised him \u200bor his administration, calling on the Federal Communications Commission to strip disfavoured broadcast stations of their licences.<\/p>\n

Since returning to the presidency in January 2025, Trump has openly badgered reporters, particularly from US television networks.<\/p>\n

Last year, he also banned the Associated Press from the usual pool \u200cof reporters that cover his \u2060movements because the news agency did not adopt Trump\u2019s preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico, which Trump has instructed executive branch employees to refer to as the Gulf of America.<\/p>\n

US representative Frank \u200cPallone, the lead Democrat on the House of Representatives<\/a>\u2019 energy and commerce committee, called Trump\u2019s action censorship.<\/p>\n
