President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration is planning to recommend that certain childhood immunizations be broken up into five separate shots, each with a \u201csmall amount of the vaccine.\u201d These \u201c20% doses\u201d would each be given six months apart, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of a child going in and having a tremendous amount of different vaccines pumped into a big proportion of the body \u2026 we\u2019re going to recommend that they do five doses marked one, two, three, four, five and that they be given in six-month intervals, so that a small amount of the vaccine gets pumped into the body,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
Such a plan would render vaccines ineffective and would not make them safer, said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
Trump also said Friday that \u201ccertain vaccines were taken out because they\u2019re not needed until the child would be much older,\u201d an apparent reference to the federal childhood vaccine schedule \u2014 which the administration attempted to overhaul this year before it was temporarily blocked by a federal judge.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s unclear which vaccines Trump was referring to at Friday\u2019s news conference; he specifically mentioned only the polio vaccine, which he said has \u201cbeen amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump suggested that the federal vaccination schedule changes he referenced Friday would lead to a \u201cmassive reduction in autism,\u201d even though extensive scientific studies of vaccines have yielded no evidence of a connection to autism.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has not responded to CNN\u2019s request for further details about the plans that Trump outlined Friday.<\/p>\n
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. \u2014 who was standing by Trump as he outlined the planned vaccine changes \u2014 received a standing ovation Thursday at the conference of the anti-vaccine advocacy group Children\u2019s Health Defense, where he gave the keynote. He praised Trump\u2019s embrace of vaccine skeptics, telling the conference attendees, \u201cYou have a strong and steadfast friend at the White House,\u201d and saying he would \u201cstay in this fight.\u201d<\/p>\n
In August, Trump signed an executive order aimed at reshaping the federal government\u2019s approach toward childhood vaccines, insisting that infants should receive fewer immunizations over a longer period and advising that the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine be separated into three individual shots, despite little scientific evidence supporting such sweeping changes.<\/p>\n
Trump has previously claimed that \u201clarge amounts \u2013 like vats of vaccine \u2013 are currently pumped into your child\u2019s body\u201d and that this supposedly large volume of fluid \u2013 \u201cthe size of a bottle of soda\u201d \u2013 was dangerous.<\/p>\n
