Dunnes Stores has issued an urgent product recall of a popular freezer staple over concerns it could pose a serious health risk to shoppers.<\/p>\n

The recall, announced on Friday by the Food<\/a> Safety Authority of Ireland ( FSAI<\/a> ), affects specific batches of Dunnes<\/a> Stores Potato Waffles (680g) with a best before date of July 2028, which retail for \u20ac1.45.<\/p>\n

The food safety watchdog has confirmed that the freezer favourite has been withdrawn from shelves due to elevated levels of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH). The substance can pose significant health risks if consumed regularly over a prolonged period.<\/p>\n

While there is no immediate cause for concern for customers who have already eaten the product, MOAH has been found to damage DNA and may heighten the risk of cancer, particularly if ingested in large quantities over time.<\/p>\n

MOAH is a genotoxic carcinogen, meaning that no level of exposure is considered entirely safe for human health, reports the Irish Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An FSAI spokesperson said: “Mineral oil hydrocarbons comprise a wide range of chemical compounds obtained mainly from petroleum distillation and refining.<\/p>\n

Dunnes Stores is recalling the above batch of Potato Waffles 680g due to elevated levels of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH)<\/p>\n

“They are categorised into two main groups referred to as mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons.<\/p>\n

“Mineral oil hydrocarbons can be present in food in many ways, such as through environmental contamination; use of lubricants for machinery during harvesting and food production; processing aids; food or feed additives; and migration from food contact materials. Some substances in the mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons group are of possible health concern.<\/p>\n

“Although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an immediate risk to health, continuous consumption over a long period of time may pose a potential risk to health.<\/p>\n

“Therefore, exposure to mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons needs to be minimised.”<\/p>\n

Officials have confirmed that anyone who has bought the affected products should “stop eating them immediately” and follow the recall guidelines.<\/p>\n

The FSAI confirmed that recall notices will be posted at point-of-sale in Dunnes Stores branches.<\/p>\n

Customers who may have bought the frozen potato waffles are being advised not to consume them and to bring them back for a full refund instead. No receipt is necessary.<\/p>\n

Since the product is suitable for home freezing, shoppers are encouraged to check their freezers to determine if they have the affected batch.<\/p>\n
