After the summer we\u2019ve just had, we\u2019re trying to figure out ways to keep our A-rated home cool during the warmer months. Please advise.<\/p>\n

Shay says:<\/p>\n

After this summer, a lot of homeowners are asking the same thing. So let\u2019s look at what\u2019s actually causing it, how good design prevents it, and what you can do before next summer.<\/p>\n

Short answer: it\u2019s not really an A-rating problem \u2014 it\u2019s a glass and ventilation problem. The heat you\u2019re feeling is solar gain: too much heat coming through the glass, with nowhere to go once it\u2019s in.<\/p>\n

I put the question to a few people who deal with this daily. Kieran McCarthy of KMC Homes puts it simply: \u201cSolar gain means there\u2019s too much heat coming in through the glass\u201d and he\u2019s clear that this is a modern design issue and not something that\u2019s unique to A-rated homes.<\/p>\n

Fergal Cantwell of Envirobead adds that new builds and retrofits have fewer draughts and minimal ventilation, so the air inside has nowhere to move and turns stale. Architect Brian Guckian sums up the result: new homes are airtight, meaning that the heat that gets in struggles to get back out.<\/p>\n

The solution? <\/p>\n

This needs to be solved at the design stage and not retrospectively. \u00a0Brian\u2019s view is that glass specification is rarely thought through properly during design and he confirms that solar-neutral glass is what\u2019s actually needed.<\/p>\n

Kieran makes a similar point about fitting anti-solar-gain film to the glass itself. Both are pointing at the same issue \u2013 nobody\u2019s designing for summer, only for winter heat loss.<\/p>\n

Other design fixes worth knowing about: external shutters, the way many of our European neighbours build as standard, and shading like louvres should be considered at design stage rather than bolted on later. Brian notes that roof overhangs help in summer and winter alike \u2014 and that a house\u2019s orientation has to be factored in when you\u2019re planning shading.<\/p>\n

And before you reach for air conditioning: Kieran\u2019s advice is to hold off installing it for a few years yet, since it\u2019s genuinely unclear what next summer, or the one after, will bring.<\/p>\n

What you can do now:<\/p>\n

Fit an awning. These work at both ground and first-floor level and cut solar gain directly.
\nGet a protective film or coating on your glass, especially south-facing windows, to reduce the heat coming through.
\nOpen your windows for 15 minutes morning and evening. This releases stale, overheated air and costs nothing.
\nIf you\u2019re designing or extending, specify solar-neutral glass and shading now; overhangs, orientation, and shutters are far cheaper to build in than to retrofit later.
\nHold off on air conditioning unless you\u2019re certain you need it. It\u2019s an expensive fix for a problem that better glass and ventilation can often solve.<\/p>\n
