For several decades now, HBO has been the home of some of the best TV shows of all time, from prestige dramas like “The Sopranos” and “The Wire” to the best HBO sitcoms ever made<\/a>, like “Veep” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” However, keeping a hit program consistently good is a high-wire act that many shows don’t pull off. The ones that do are few and far between, while the ones that don’t end up prematurely canceled and panned by critics.<\/p>\n

HBO, for all its success stories, is no stranger to airing shows that don’t meet the expectations of viewers. Some shows that were primed to be the cable network’s newest benchmark series slowly lost favor with their audiences, while other shows were doomed from the get-go with a mismanaged production. The one thing all these shows have in common, however? They all had so much potential to be among HBO’s greatest IP.<\/p>\n

These 10 series from throughout HBO’s recent history often vary drastically in quality from season to season, or even episode to episode. While audiences may have been lured in by the promise of good television, most just ended up disappointed by the missed opportunities and failed executions, proving that even the most lauded TV studios can get it wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vinyl<\/p>\n

On paper, “Vinyl” had all the elements to make a smash hit for HBO. The series was executive-produced by none other than Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger, with Scorsese also directing the pilot episode. Set in the 1970s, “Vinyl” explores the ever-changing landscape of New York City’s music scene through the eyes of record executive Richie Finestra (Bobby Cannavale), with an ensemble that includes his wife, Devon (Olivia Wilde); assistant, Jamie (Juno Temple); and promoter, Zak (Ray Romano).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Given its early critical acclaim, it’s clear HBO had some faith in the show by renewing it for a second season shortly after the pilot aired. However, even with a juggernaut like Scorsese involved behind the scenes, the show faced criticism for its uneven pacing, over-reliance on nostalgia, and meandering story. Despite clear potential for the show’s future, HBO\u00a0reversed its decision and canceled “Vinyl” after one season, which Scorsese chalked up to not having as much of a hand in directing beyond the first episode.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course, there have since been other period dramas at HBO exploring the late 20th century, like “The Deuce,” but the fresh take on the music scene and appearances by historical figures like Andy Warhol and Karen Carpenter set “Vinyl” up for an interesting run, had it not been canned. Many viewers feel it’s one of many fantastic HBO shows that were canceled too soon<\/a>, but perhaps it’s for the best if they couldn’t make the premise sing even with all the talent involved.<\/p>\n

Westworld<\/p>\n

Season 1 of “Westworld” was a massive success for HBO, but unfortunately, that momentum did not carry over into later seasons. “Westworld” is set in an elitist, Wild West-themed amusement park populated by realistic androids (called “Hosts”) who are slowly gaining consciousness of their own existence and the way they are treated by human guests, culminating in a full-blown revolution led by Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood).\u00a0<\/p>\n

With an ensemble cast, “Westworld” juggles a lot of disparate plot threads in its first season alone: the investigation into host abnormalities by programmer Bernard (Jeffrey Wright), host Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) searching for the truth about her past life, and a sadistic guest’s (Ed Harris) obsessive quest to find the Maze, which he believes will reveal a deeper level of the park.\u00a0However, the ultimate flaw, as “Westworld” continued for an additional three seasons, was losing this initial mystery and expanding outward into the greater world beyond Westworld, eventually becoming a stranger to the show it was in the first season and losing nearly its entire audience in the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Having fallen far from where it started, HBO canceled the show after four seasons. To make matters worse for the show’s remaining fans, HBO removed “Westworld” from HBO Max<\/a>, meaning that unless you rent it through video-on-demand or buy it on DVD, you have few ways to easily watch the series that was once hailed as the new “Game of Thrones.”<\/p>\n

Camping<\/p>\n

In 2018, Lena Dunham had a lot of credibility at HBO, having recently finished a six-season run of “Girls,” one of the best HBO comedy TV shows<\/a>. Her follow-up was always going to be a tough act to follow, especially when it was an American adaptation of a critically acclaimed British comedy by Julia Davis. “Camping” follows the fraught marriage of Kathryn (Jennifer Garner) and Walt (David Tennant) ahead of Walt’s 45th birthday, where a wilderness gathering of friends and family results in a clash of personalities that threatens to ruin the whole celebration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite only being eight episodes long, a lot of interpersonal drama unfolds in the span of this one camping trip, though none of it impressed critics. Although Dunham had cut her teeth writing extremely unlikable characters in “Girls,” the tides seemed to turn with “Camping,” as the characters’ flaws make them difficult to root for and the show, ultimately, hard to watch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Camping” was conceived as a limited series and ended after its eight-episode run. Given the show’s largely negative reviews, perhaps that was for the best. More successful adaptations like “The Four Seasons” keep their casts focused, whereas “Camping” is chock-full of characters who rob screen time from the central couple we’re supposed to care about.<\/p>\n

Avenue 5<\/p>\n

When you consider all the stars that were aligned for “Avenue 5” to happen, it’s honestly impressive that the show itself ended up being so mediocre. You’ve got Armando Iannucci, creator of HBO’s Emmy darling “Veep,” leading the production, with a cast that includes Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Rebecca Front, and Zach Woods. However, upon the premiere of its first season in 2020, reviews suggested that the show had little direction and even fewer laughs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In “Avenue 5,” Laurie plays Ryan Clark, the incompetent captain of the titular interplanetary luxury liner, owned by petulant billionaire Herman Judd (Gad). When the ship is thrown off course by a gravity malfunction, delaying their eight-week voyage by three years, chaos ensues among passengers as the ship’s crew tries to maintain peace and safely return to Earth. Though the TV show is set mostly in space<\/a>, Iannucci can’t help but divert the narrative back to Earth, where, in the second season, a meta commentary on Hollywood overtakes the rescue mission as a drama series reimagines the events of the show we’re watching.<\/p>\n

Obviously, compared to Iannucci’s work on “Veep” or even pre-HBO with “The Thick of It,” “Avenue 5” is sloppy and nonsensical, making the characters in the show look like geniuses by comparison. Though HBO was supportive enough to give the show a second season, it was canceled in spite of Iannucci’s plans for a third.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Time Traveler’s Wife<\/p>\n

Since “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger was released as a novel in 2003, it’s been adapted numerous times on and off screen. However, the 2022 HBO adaptation developed by Steven Moffat, a veteran of time travel narratives thanks to his work on “Doctor Who,” missed an opportunity to update this story for a modern audience, falling victim to tired science-fiction tropes, melodramatic writing, and outdated gender stereotypes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The Time Traveler’s Wife” stars “Game of Thrones” veteran Rose Leslie in the titular role of Clare, who falls in love with Theo James’s Henry, a man with a condition that causes him to travel through time uncontrollably. The poorly aged aspects of the book, including Henry’s interactions with Clare as a child in the past, as well as Clare’s lack of agency in her own life, don’t get reworked for a modern audience, instead coming off as just tone-deaf and downright creepy.<\/p>\n

Among the show’s boldest changes to the source material, however, is every episode beginning with either of its leads addressing a camera head-on, a lazy excuse for storytelling that’s ineffective at rounding the edges of this controversial book. Compared to\u00a0the best TV shows about time travel<\/a>, “The Time Traveler’s Wife” could’ve reinvented the genre, but instead disappointed audiences by staying too true to its source material.\u00a0<\/p>\n

White House Plumbers<\/p>\n

Take one look at Justin Theroux’s mustache in this HBO limited series, and you’d be forgiven for thinking he was a different kind of plumber. Based on a book chronicling the Watergate scandal, “White House Plumbers” follows Theroux and Woody Harrelson as G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt, respectively, the men tasked with preventing Watergate from breaking into the news, but whose actions ultimately doomed the Nixon administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“White House Plumbers” is, notably, stacked with a strong cast beyond Theroux and Harrelson, including Lena Headey, Domhnall Gleeson, Judy Greer, Ike Barinholtz, and Kiernan Shipka, to name a few. However, this overabundance turned out to be the inherent flaw of the series, according to reviewers, claiming it overstuffs its narrative of a complex political scandal with details while simultaneously trying to play it off as a farce, leading to a cocktail of tones that never adds up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It’s a constant struggle for TV shows based on a true story<\/a> to remain faithful to true events while also delivering entertaining television. In the case of a star-studded series like “White House Plumbers,” this news-making scandal in the ’70s doesn’t quite translate to an interesting show. At the very least, fans of “All the President’s Men” get to enjoy a nearly 50-year-later reprisal by Robert Redford as Bob Woodward via voice cameo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Idol<\/p>\n

Some pop stars have proven their talents aren’t limited to the arena stage: Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Ariana Grande have given excellent performances in TV and films that rival their best work as musicians. The Weeknd, a.k.a. Abel Tesfaye, is not one of those pop stars. If “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” his film with Jenna Ortega, hadn’t reconfirmed it, then his HBO series “The Idol” would’ve been all the proof you need to know that some stars just aren’t meant to pivot in their careers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The Idol” was co-created by Sam Levinson, whose work with HBO on “Euphoria” has already made him a bigwig at the cable network. Lily-Rose Depp stars as Jocelyn, a pop star whose comeback is complicated by the presence of nightclub owner Tedros (Tesfaye), whose cult-like following threatens her already fragile well-being. It says a lot that viewers were disappointed by the series even when the writing was on the wall before it was released, with Rolling Stone reporting that creative differences saw original director Amy Seimetz leaving the project, with Tesfaye and Levinson shifting the perspective away from Jocelyn and onto Tedros.<\/p>\n

The result was a series widely panned by critics for its disjointedness, misogynistic tone, and laughably terrible performances. It didn’t come as much of a surprise when “The Idol” was canceled at HBO<\/a> after one season. Sometimes, vanity projects are just too heavy on the “vanity.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Regime<\/p>\n

It seems nearly impossible to do wrong by an actor like Kate Winslet, given she elevates whatever material she’s given. However, there’s only so much she could’ve done for “The Regime.” The HBO series, released in 2024, is a political satire in which Winslet stars as Elena Vernham, the paranoid chancellor of a fictional European nation, whose fragile mental stability is threatened by untrustworthy advisors, foreign policy affairs, and personal issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Simply put, “The Regime” is a misfire that wasted Winslet’s talent<\/a>, especially after her unparalleled run of incredible HBO miniseries, including “Mildred Pierce” and “Mare of Easttown.” Though Winslet’s performance is solid as always, the writing never finds the right tone between a serious, dry political drama and a farcical, absurd comedy. Furthermore, the political satire at its center is painfully basic; there’s little point to be made about power, corruption, and influence that isn’t said better by other HBO shows like “Veep” or even early seasons of “Game of Thrones.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

That’s not to say the show didn’t have potential, Winslet aside. Creator Will Tracy’s resume includes being editor-in-chief of The Onion as well as writing for “Succession” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” The directing by Stephen Frears (“Dangerous Liaisons,” “A Very English Scandal”) and Jessica Hobbs (“The Crown,” “Broadchurch”) is admirable as well. All these pieces just sadly don’t come together into a cohesive show, but at least there were never plans for it to continue past one season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dune: Prophecy<\/p>\n

Denis Villeneuve turned Frank Herbert’s “Dune” books into a blockbuster media franchise, expanding beyond feature films into an HBO spin-off series, “Dune: Prophecy.” The series, set thousands of years before the events of the movies, chronicles the origins of the Bene Gesserit, led by Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) and her sister Tula (Olivia Williams), who face the threat of being exterminated by the power-hungry soldier Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Though the series boasts some impressive production design and visuals, as well as strong performances, the lack of involvement from a director like Villeneuve makes it pale in comparison to the “Dune” movies. Especially given its lack of relevance to the films, it’s a slog to sit through all the politics and chatting compared to the action fans of the Villeneuve films are used to.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ultimately,\u00a0“Dune: Prophecy” is too dense a spin-off<\/a> to appeal to the more mainstream fans of the movies, so its appeal is really only for those who care about the greater lore of the “Dune” universe. Still, even the most hardcore fans of the “Dune” books might have a hard time finding a reason to stick through the entire first season, let alone the impending second.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness<\/p>\n

Larry David has spent most of the 21st century thus far creating “Curb Your Enthusiasm” on HBO, which ran for 12 seasons, satirizing social norms, show business, and human behavior. Following the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” series finale<\/a>, fans might’ve questioned what David would do next, and as it turns out … it’s rehashing the same jokes throughout eras of American history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness” is a star-studded sketch comedy series in which David re-enacts historical moments, albeit incorporating his own brand of “Seinfeld”-esque humor into them. The best sketches feature guest stars like Rob Reiner, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Barack Obama (who also co-produces the series), but\u00a0far too many recycle “Curb” bits, whether it’s “respecting wood” or wishing people “Happy New Year” late into January.<\/p>\n

If you’re a fan of David’s work in “Seinfeld” and “Curb,” then you’ll probably find a sketch or two to laugh at in his new HBO series. However, for his highly anticipated first big project since “Curb,” it’s a pretty lazy attempt by David and his co-creators to recreate the laughs he got a long time ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n
