The boss of the chipmaker Nvidia<\/a> has said AI will not develop to a point that will lead to the extinction of the human race within a few years, rejecting such assertions as overblown \u201cdoomsday narratives\u201d.<\/p>\n

Jensen Huang, the co-founder and chief executive of the $5tn AI chipmaker, said the claims made on social media by the former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon that AI could become \u201csuperhuman\u201d and kill off humanity<\/a> within the decade was \u201cirresponsible\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c2030 is not going to be the end of the world. There is 0% chance that\u2019s going to be the end of the world,\u201d Huang said in an interview with CBS News. \u201cScaring people is unnecessary. It is irresponsible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coxon\u2019s remarks, which were backed by two other researchers at the maker of the AI Claude, prompted an international debate about the dangers and lack of oversight of AI as companies race to develop ever more powerful models.<\/p>\n

US lawmakers have criticised AI companies over the risks<\/a> and Anthropic published a threat intelligence report detailing how criminals, state-sponsored groups, spyware vendors, scientists and propagandists have tried to use its powerful AI models to design missiles and bombs, create deadly pathogens and spy on dissidents.<\/p>\n

Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic, Sam Altman, the boss of the ChatGPT maker OpenAI, and Elon Musk have called for development of the technology to be slowed down.<\/p>\n

However, Donald Trump has dismissed anxiety over the AI development as a \u201choax\u201d and a \u201cconspiracy\u201d<\/a>, adding that a slowdown could give China the edge.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Scott Bessent, the US Treasury secretary, said the US and China had agreed to set up an AI dialogue mechanism<\/a> to alert each other to help contain the technology\u2019s potential dangers.<\/p>\n

Huang insisted that predictions of an extinction-level event caused by AI were \u201cnot grounded in science\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur company\u2019s success is directly connected to the safe deployment of products and services,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we don\u2019t continue to do that, our value would be diminished. You have all kinds of liabilities associated with cybersecurity [and damage liability laws]. Apply that first. Don\u2019t let this doomsday narrative allow someone to relieve them of the laws that currently exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday the the Tony Blair Institute (TBI) thinktank published a paper arguing that countries risk \u201cprofound and compounding disadvantage\u201d if they fail to embrace AI and fall behind other nations.<\/p>\n

However, the TBI also warned that the institutions meant to support the choices leaders will have to make are not equipped to do so.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe previous [industrial] revolution transformed our world over generations, AI will do so within a decade,\u201d said Tony Blair in a foreword to the paper<\/a>. \u201cNew capabilities are emerging at an extraordinary pace, with profound implications for economies, education, science, labour markets, public services and national security. But the risks are equally profound and growing, and so too is public concern. Today\u2019s political leaders\u2026 must make hard choices that will signficantly alter their countries\u2019 trajectories.
