\n\tThe day before Miley Cyrus<\/a> released her new album<\/a>, Bass Persuades, she told Apple Music\u2019s Zane Lowe<\/a> that life on the road poses too much of a threat to her sobriety, which is heavily reliant on consistent routines and familiarity. Rather than risk it, she\u2019d prefer to stay in one place and have her audience come to her, like the two Hollywood Bowl shows she has coming up.\u00a0\u201cThis is perfect because people like to see me perform and I like to sleep in my marshmallow bed,\u201d Cyrus said. \u201cWe can both be happy.\u201d Well, kind of, but not quite.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile fans were dramatizing and dissecting her sentiment that \u201cpeople will come to me,\u201d there was another part of the interview they overlooked. It might not have seemed all that significant in its original context, but it\u2019s a small detail that feels crucial to understanding Bass Persuades and the artist who made it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAt one point, Cyrus is reflecting on grief, anxiety, and a near-death experience in 2022 \u2014 and then she mentions a particular memory of performing her song \u201cFly on the Wall\u201d for 250,000 people. \u201cI started getting existential of how small I am and how I started thinking about time,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd this is all while I\u2019m performing \u2018Fly on the Wall.\u2019\u201d She joked about not wanting to kill the vibe with her existentialism during the early cuts the crowd came to hear. Cyrus performed a lot of these old, buzzy songs during that 2022 set. They significantly outnumbered the songs selected from her recent album at the time, Plastic Hearts<\/a>, which remains her strongest record.<\/p>\n

\n\tCyrus isn\u2019t on the stage much and hasn\u2019t been in any consistent way in a long time. When she does perform, a greatest-hits format works well for her as a way to counteract the scarcity. But it doesn\u2019t seem sustainable. Listening to Bass Persuades, it\u2019s hard to understand how she can grow under those circumstances. <\/p>\n

\n\tPeople will travel to hear \u201cSee You Again\u201d and \u201cWe Can\u2019t Stop.\u201d But at 33, Cyrus couldn\u2019t be further removed from who she was when she made those songs. When she tries to re-access some version of what fueled their creation, she ends up with \u201cBass Persuades<\/a>,\u201d a rambling lead single with little to say. She reiterates 19 times that \u201cthe kids don\u2019t wanna dance.\u201d Her voice, usually an attention-demanding force, is detached from the throbbing production. Cyrus closes the album with an industrial \u201cBass Persuades\u201d remix from the noise rock band Model\/Actriz, which only pushes her further into the background. Thankfully, most of the eight songs sandwiched between these two make more of an effort to connect.<\/p>\n

\n\tBass Persuades isn\u2019t interested in dancing so much as it is invested fully in devotion. Cyrus couldn\u2019t care less about what the kids are doing. She wants to talk about her guy. Model\/Actriz join Cyrus once more on \u201cDifferent Religion,\u201d a gothic pop song about a man who drives a fast car and makes loud noise. \u201cI\u2019ve got my own god,\u201d Cyrus sings. \u201cMy god\u2019s a hot boy.\u201d If her love is anything like the battering sound of the track, it must be intense, even if its lyrics betray the feeling. Elsewhere, Cyrus has an easier time finding the words when she serenades her muse, rather than trying to tell us about him.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI would bend all space and time to fall into your hands,\u201d Cyrus sings on the aching piano ballad \u201cOrbit.\u201d The starry-eyed standout has no use for flash and spectacle, much like the singer herself these days. There\u2019s a sweet simplicity in how she races down the aisle on \u201cLet\u2019s Get Married.\u201d As far as the canon of Cyrus\u2019 love songs goes, it\u2019s an instant classic. She sweetens the story with a glimpse into how she got there in the first place on \u201cSnow.\u201d \u201cNow your knee\u2019s in the dirt as I hold out my left,\u201d she sings. \u201cYou should swallow the nerves \u2019cause there\u2019s yes on my breath.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe pairs of songs are especially wholesome and earnest coming from an artist who\u2019s been through a divorce and, in the past, couldn\u2019t resist telling two infatuated fans, \u201cI hope your marriage goes better than mine. Mine was a fucking disaster.\u201d Cyrus doesn\u2019t shy away from destruction. She\u2019s found some gems in the wreckage and rubble before. This time, she pulled \u201cAftermath\u201d from it. \u201cDo you ever fall into pieces? Do you ever think of me now and then?\u201d she asks. \u201cDon\u2019t avoid the question.\u201d When she isn\u2019t excavating the past, the only true source of Cyrus\u2019 heartbreak on this otherwise totally infatuated album is her sister, seemingly the subject of \u201cInnocent Ways.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sobering revelation contrasts with the full throttle warble of its bass. \u201cI wonder if she went and changed her number\/I tried to call her three times over\/Is she alright? It keeps on ringing.\u201d Cyrus has lived a lot of life in her 33 years. She wants to be a compass, but she\u2019s still finding her way forward. She\u2019s come to know fear and anxiety well without letting them close enough to control her. They trickle in a little on \u201cREDLIGHTS,\u201d a string-backed, euphoric synth-pop cut. \u201cTruth is all we need, and also what I fear,\u201d Cyrus sings. The track seems like the clearest, most successful showcase of what Bass Persuades aimed to accomplish both in sound and subject.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tContentment. That\u2019s what Cyrus has been reaching for all this time. She holds onto it as a means of resisting an endless search for an elusive more. The album doesn\u2019t create a sense that Cyrus is striving for some kind of mainstream breakthrough, like Endless Summer Vacation<\/a>, or even whatever artistic statement she tried to make on Something Beautiful. Her legacy is already clear: We\u2019ve entered the Hannah Montana generation of pop stars<\/a> and one of the biggest songs in the world at the moment, Ad\u00e9la\u2019s \u201cAin\u2019t in LA,\u201d<\/a> was born from the inspiration of Bangerz<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe fickle pop public Cyrus once wanted to appease no longer seems to no longer have any leverage over her. Through the thundering sound of Bass Persuades, she can\u2019t hear their defiant rebuttals to the notion that her audience will go where she goes. They aren\u2019t what motivates her \u2014 especially not in the way the love she goes home to at the end of the night does.<\/p>\n
