\u201cI will tell you, though, and this is right from the top\u00a0from the president of the United States: We\u2019re only doing good deals, and we haven\u2019t always done good deals,\u201d Isaacman said. \u201cThere was absolutely a time where\u00a0we were trying [to]\u00a0make everyone happy. Let\u2019s get a lot of flags together for a great press release, and\u00a0it can [be], and absolutely has been, at times,\u00a0a drag on the mission instead of accelerating it. You can\u2019t do that, and we\u2019ve changed that now, and\u00a0as a result, good deals are happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s a good deal?<\/p>\n

Isaacman singled out as a good deal NASA\u2019s agreement with the Italian government in March for the development of living quarters for astronauts on the Moon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re committing over $5 billion to building one of the first habitation modules,\u201d Isaacman said. \u201cIt likely\u00a0will be the first real habitation module that makes its way to the lunar surface. And as a result, you\u2019re going to see two Italian astronauts on the surface of the Moon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Japan, too, is coming in clutch for NASA, Isaacman said, with a multibillion-dollar commitment to develop a pressurized rover<\/a> to ferry astronauts across the Moon. In exchange, Japan will likewise get two tickets to the Moon for the country\u2019s astronauts. The US and Japanese governments signed the agreement on the pressurized rover in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the expectation\u00a0we set for everyone,\u201d Isaacman said. \u201cYou\u2019re not just going to bring us a list and say, \u2018I will do this regardless if it helps the mission or competes with US\u00a0industry and what US\u00a0industry is trying to accomplish on the Moon.\u2019 That\u00a0is not going to work. We need\u00a0meaningful contributions now.
