The Government is considering changes to renewable energy grants to make it easier for people to make the move away from fossil fuels<\/a>, the D\u00e1il has heard.<\/p>\n

Public expenditure minister Jack Chambers<\/a> said environment minister Darragh O\u2019Brien is drawing up proposals to improve grant supports.<\/p>\n

Mr Chambers said these changes would \u201cbetter calibrate our grant support system to promote renewable energy options\u201d and move people away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

He said changes would be announced as part of Budget 2027<\/a>, which will be revealed on October 6.<\/p>\n

The public expenditure minister was responding to questions from Social Democrats TD Cian O\u2019Callaghan, who raised concerns about rising electricity costs.<\/p>\n

Mr O\u2019Callaghan cited new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) which found that wholesale electricity prices had risen by 76.9% year-on-year as of August.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all know that we are particularly vulnerable to these price shocks because we are so dependent on fossil fuels. Trump is to blame for a lot of things, but he is not to blame for that. We are hooked on fossil fuels,\u201d Mr O\u2019Callaghan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is a direct result of this Government’s incompetence and negligence, and it has left hundreds of thousands of households hopelessly exposed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr O\u2019Callaghan called on the Government to introduce a targeted \u20ac400 energy credit, saying it would assist low- and middle-income families who \u201cdesperately need it\u201d.<\/p>\n

In response, Mr Chambers said the Government was aware of the serious pressures faced by families heading into the winter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s taking centre stage of all our estimates discussions, and also how we’re examining different and further interventions when it comes to how we tax energy in the economy,\u201d Mr Chambers said.<\/p>\n

He said there would be an income tax package as well as measures within the social protection budget to \u201chelp those most in need\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Chambers said this would come in the form of changes to fuel allowance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re also considering further options for home heating oil.
