Most patients will assume that to be the case but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/10\/02\/doctors-sanctioned-overseas-able-to-retain-licences-to-practice-in-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/10\/02\/doctors-sanctioned-overseas-able-to-retain-licences-to-practice-in-ireland\/\">new global investigation<\/a> has found serious flaws in the system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">And it is happening in Ireland: 11 doctors who have faced serious sanctions in the UK, including being struck off, remain registered in Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free b-it-article-body__text--left\">In each case, the UK sanction was not recorded on the doctor\u2019s publicly available record published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-medical-council\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-medical-council\/\" target=\"_blank\">Medical Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free b-it-article-body__text--left\">The information comes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/10\/02\/doctors-sanctioned-overseas-able-to-retain-licences-to-practice-in-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/10\/02\/doctors-sanctioned-overseas-able-to-retain-licences-to-practice-in-ireland\/\">Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project<\/a>, which in the past has investigated transnational criminal gangs and drug cartels but in recent months has turned its attention to doctor registration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Irish Times crime and security correspondent Conor Gallagher joined international journalists from more than 50 other media outlets to uncover this very real threat to patient safety.
