{"id":633479,"date":"2026-09-23T12:42:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T12:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/633479\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T12:42:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T12:42:15","slug":"corporate-tax-disclosures-reveal-gulf-between-payments-by-tech-giants-and-other-multinationals-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/633479\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporate tax disclosures reveal gulf between payments by tech giants and other multinationals \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The State\u2019s reliance on a select number of multinationals for tens of billions of euro of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/corporation-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/corporation-tax\/\">corporation tax receipts <\/a>has been exposed in filings newly published by Irish authorities, showing Apple and Microsoft accounted for 98 per cent of the total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Reports published by the Companies Registration Office (CRO) show 25 firms have disclosed combined Irish cash-tax payments of \u20ac20.1 billion under new European Union transparency rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Irish Times analysis of the country-by-country reports found that 18 of the remaining companies \u2013 including Accenture, Bank of America, Walgreens Boots Alliance and Harvey Norman \u2013 contributed between six- and nine-figure sums totalling approximately \u20ac388 million between them. Five firms paid less than \u20ac100,000.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1790167335_894_1784803479672-9ae96ac7-c636-4bcb-998c-c0aedcc60931.jpeg\"\/>Soaring energy costs and why \u2018we can\u2019t protect everyone from the impact of war\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The filings cover overlapping financial periods. The earliest reporting period began in June 2024 and the latest ended in January 2026. That means the filings relate to a 19-month span.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/corporation-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/corporation-tax\/\">The State collected approximately \u20ac60 billion in net corporation-tax receipts <\/a>during that period from July 2024 to January 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The data has been published by multinationals due to the new European Union country-by-country reporting directive. It mandates multinationals with global revenues of more than \u20ac750 million to disclose specific financial data, including how much tax was paid in EU states and their pretax profits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CRO has published 32 individual company reports to date. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">None of the pharma firms with large operations in the Republic, which are understood to be significant contributors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/corporation-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/corporation-tax\/\">corporation tax receipts<\/a>, have filed the reports yet. Weight loss drug giant Eli Lilly previously said it paid a $6.6 billion Irish corporation tax bill in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An analysis of the 32 disclosures by The Irish Times has shown 25 companies reported paying tax in the period. Three reported negative balances, which would indicate refunds or adjustments, and three recorded no cash tax payment. A cash tax payment refers to money having been paid, as opposed to a tax liability. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Belfast-based agribusiness W&amp;R Barnett filed a report but availed of an exemption to withhold a figure for tax paid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Most of the firms reported Irish taxes paid in US dollars, with $17.1 billion (\u20ac14.9 billion) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/08\/21\/apples-irish-operation-accounted-for-two-fifths-of-43bn-global-tax-payments-last-year\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/08\/21\/apples-irish-operation-accounted-for-two-fifths-of-43bn-global-tax-payments-last-year\/\">linked to Apple<\/a> and $5.6 billion (\u20ac4.9 billion) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2026\/07\/01\/microsofts-irish-business-paid-56bn-in-corporation-tax-last-year\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2026\/07\/01\/microsofts-irish-business-paid-56bn-in-corporation-tax-last-year\/\">paid by Microsoft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2026\/09\/19\/cliff-taylor-irelands-corporate-tax-advantage-is-over-so-whats-the-plan\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland\u2019s corporate tax advantage is over. So what\u2019s the plan?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Consultancy firm Accenture, which has more than 5,200 staff in the Republic, recorded the third-largest tax bill in the group of 32 firms.
