Bahr-de Stefano, a venture capitalist in New York, wanted a table at 4 Charles Prime Rib earlier this month. The West Village steakhouse is one of the city\u2019s most covetable tables, with spots there on the reservation platform Resy being snapped up within seconds of their release.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt000z3b6qw5fpehj6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So Stefano turned to Instinct, a personal AI assistant. \u201cI didn\u2019t lay out explicit actions to take,\u201d Stefano said. \u201cI just said, \u2018I want you to do this. Go do it,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00103b6qglctc8wr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The bot went and tried. When it couldn\u2019t come up with a table, he encouraged it to keep going. \u201cI said, \u2018You can figure it out. Come on.\u2019 It was like giving it a pep talk,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00113b6q5pifm3s6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leaving the bot to its work, Stefano turned to getting a reservation somewhere else for himself and his parents. When he tried to log into Resy, he found that he had been locked out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00123b6q9o731pxz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI realized after a couple minutes that Instinct might have done something,\u201d he said. Indeed, it had. Given the job of finding a reservation, he said, the AI assistant had been pinging Resy \u201chundreds of times every hour of the day.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00133b6qkk4zibin@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOf course I got banned,\u201d he said. \u201cResy figured it was a bot which is a totally fair response.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00143b6q6ovird05@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Resy said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.restaurantbusinessonline.com\/technology\/ai-agents-can-help-diners-book-table-it-can-also-get-them-banned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement to the industry magazine Restaurants Business<\/a> that it \u201cdoes not currently permit unapproved third-party bots or agents to independently access or interact with the Resy platform.\u201d Stefano, who has since had his account reinstated, said he learned his lesson. \u201cThat was my first time and last time doing that,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00163b6q30avveez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Personal AI agents, like Instinct, are part of an emerging category of apps that act as digital personal assistants. Users provide the app with credentials like email logins and credit card information and then ask the aps to do things for them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00173b6qfcuskcll@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People have used AI assistants to find <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tamarawinter\/status\/2099859471237361962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">new apartments<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/pitdesi\/status\/2090579987778937159?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">cancel subscriptions<\/a>, as well as to manage their own calendars and make doctor\u2019s appointments. Instinct recently raised $350 million, and in September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/23\/tech\/meta-muse-ai-agent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta released Muse, its own personal AI agent<\/a>, which has been downloaded more than 2 million times already.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00183b6qyhaevbe4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These AI agents have been developed at a time when airlines, insurance companies and utility providers are making it increasingly difficult to speak to a human in order to solve a problem. After years of yelling \u201cagent\u201d during automated customer service calls in the hopes of reaching a real person, it\u2019s little wonder why people are trying to automate their annoying tasks, even if it means unleashing a new avalanche of bots onto the internet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt00193b6q92cthjhs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Making restaurant reservations on their creator\u2019s behalf is one of the AI assistants\u2019 most visible use cases, especially as diners face the growing headache of navigating different apps and credit card reward tiers just to book a meal. Many popular restaurants have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cCsEh_atBTY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">abandoned phone numbers and email addresses<\/a> in favor of managing everything via their reservation platform of choice.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001a3b6qlle8wcfc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apps like Dorsia, which charge a yearly membership fee of up to $25,000, and gray-market reservation marketplaces like AppointmentTrader have created a class system where deep-pocketed diners can cut to the front of the line. Personal AI agents now threaten to make that even worse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001c3b6q0pyjsbpf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are dehumanizing the last standing experience that is still totally human,\u201d said Roni Mazumdar, the co-owner of several award-winning restaurants including Dhamaka and Semma in New York.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001d3b6qxjoi41by@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mazumdar is concerned that if some people are able to walk around with a bot in their pockets that can constantly scrape a website looking for a table, it\u2019ll reinforce a system that is already frustrating restaurant operators where reservations are gobbled up by clout chasers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001e3b6qck1nbnbc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen the entire system is gamed, you create an environment where those who are excited by a place can\u2019t even go, but someone who doesn\u2019t really care gets to say, \u2018Yeah, I went there\u2019 for bragging rights. It\u2019s just a lose-lose proposition,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001f3b6qm5cm44zz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor as long as we\u2019ve had hard-to-get-into restaurants, we\u2019ve had people trying to hack the system. These bots are nothing new,\u201d said Ben Leventhal, the founder of the loyalty platform Blackbird and a co-founder of Resy. He said that Resy did what it was supposed to do by enforcing its terms of service, but that the industry will have to adapt and evolve as people use new tools.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/dyj18n-20260922223849163.jpg\" alt=\"Some people are using personal bots to scour reservation platforms in search of tough-to-book tables at restaurants like New York City's Carbone.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001g3b6qbxzesckl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leventhal added that the AI assistants do provide some easier avenues to bad behavior among diners, though, and reservation platforms need to find a way to deal with that. \u201cPeople want to skip the line, and obviously that\u2019s not going to scale for legitimate platforms,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001h3b6qb4cc2dfc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jeremy Mustakas, the COO of Jean-Georges Restaurants in New York, said that AI tools have been helpful in streamlining some of their back-office operations, but that humanity is still at the core of what restaurants do, even if costs some efficiencies. \u201cNot every interaction or task needs to be optimized,\u201d Mustakas said. \u201cOur work requires patience, discretion, even spontaneity. AI can\u2019t read the room the way a great hospitality professional can.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001j3b6qr7yab17j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like other AI systems, these personal agents don\u2019t always behave the way people want them to. Brian Distelburger, a tech entrepreneur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ai-agent-banned-resy-account-reinstated-2026-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">also got banned from Resy<\/a> for using an overeager agent to look for a table at, yes, 4 Charles Prime Rib. And in August, Jason Yeh, a venture capitalist in Los Angeles, said that he prompted his Instinct bot to look for restaurant reservations for a trip to Tokyo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001k3b6qudz14bzp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cInstinct found an opening for a random restaurant I never suggested, and made a reservation despite the restaurant having a 100% charge cancellation policy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jasonoliver\/status\/2092252590021198001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he posted on X<\/a>. \u201cHonestly kind of insane how anyone would give them keys to their accounts at large, and they better cover the $200 cancellation fee here.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001l3b6qe2ggvktm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His Instinct bot was apologetic in a way familiar to anyone who has used Claude or ChatGPT. \u201cHonest answer: I keep running notes from our conversations so your preferences carry over,\u201d the messages Yeh posted on X read. \u201cThe failure was acting on my own notes without verifying them against what you actually said.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001m3b6q073fzwcp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some tech evangelists have suggested that this is a key step towards an internet that will be all bots, where one person\u2019s personal AI assistant will interact with a reservation platform or restaurant\u2019s bot and hash things out between them or even set up an \u201cauction\u201d to decide who gets the reservation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001n3b6q53ri4atq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stefano isn\u2019t sold on that approach. \u201cIf there are 1,000 agents trying to get one table and it goes to the one that bids the most, to me that feels almost like dystopian capitalism. That\u2019s taking it too far,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001o3b6qkyqvh509@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leventhal said he doesn\u2019t think restaurant operators will want to cede control of who gets to eat at their establishment to bots. \u201cThe idea that these systems are going to become obsolete because of an agent-to-agent layer doesn\u2019t take into account the broad context of how the restaurant industry functions,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t see a world where restaurants get comfortable letting a bunch of bots hash it all out.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001p3b6qfyf8u9a6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt takes the magic out of restaurants quite quickly,\u201d said Mazumdar. \u201cI just think people should get a fair shot of going out and dining and having a good time and that it shouldn\u2019t have to feel like a game.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmud5wzrt001q3b6q4s18lx5p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have clear pathways to using the technology to automate the tasks, but they can never automate the humanity,\u201d said Mustakas. \u201cThe technology should open doors, but it shouldn\u2019t create a digital velvet rope.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"J.C.
