A sea turtle crawled out of the surf in southern California<\/a> last weekend around sunset and started laying eggs in the sand.<\/p>\n

People on Huntington Beach who saw the female olive ridley sea turtle were shocked and excited. And they weren\u2019t the only ones freaking out, said Justin Viezbicke, the California stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (Noaa).<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first documented case of a turtle nesting on the west coast,\u201d Viezbicke said.<\/p>\n

What made the sighting even more noteworthy is that two different olive ridley sea turtles were identified laying eggs on Orange county beaches in the last week, the first on Seal Beach and the second on Huntington Beach. It\u2019s a pattern that has scientists questioning whether the nestings are a freak occurrence, or the beginnings of a more lasting trend.<\/p>\n

While early news reports<\/a> suggested that a single female turtle laid eggs on both California beaches, scientists further analyzed photographs of the turtles\u2019 shell shape and barnacle patterns and determined that two separate olive ridley turtles had begun nesting on the US coast, Viezbicke said.<\/p>\n

Olive ridley turtles typically lay their eggs on beaches much further to the south, in Mexico and Central America, Viezbicke said.<\/p>\n

What caused the turtles to begin nesting further north than usual is the \u201cmillion dollar question\u201d, he said. Scientists are examining several different theories, including the environmental factor of warmer coastal waters, to other effects of El Ni\u00f1o, or whether the turtles \u201ccould have been blown off course by the recent hurricane\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of activity in the Pacific Ocean,\u201d Viezbicke said.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s too soon to tell, it\u2019s also possible that these first recorded US coastal nests could herald a broader northward shift in the olive ridley turtle\u2019s nesting patterns, one driven by climate crisis and the warming ocean waters in the turtles\u2019 native nesting areas, said Lance Adams, an aquarium veterinarian at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.<\/p>\n

The sex of the olive ridley turtle is determined by temperatures where the eggs hatch, and warmer temperatures produce more female turtles. \u201cAfter about 87.8F, they\u2019re almost all female,\u201d Adams said. To achieve a balanced population, the sea turtles might need access to cooler nesting areas.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, it\u2019s hard to generalize from just two sightings, Adams said: \u201cThe turtles could be here by mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because the nesting season is not over and individual olive ridley turtles typically lay multiple nests of eggs, \u201cWe might see additional sea turtles making beach crawls to nest in the next 30 to 90 days,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n

For protection, the new turtle nests have been surrounded by fencing. But there\u2019s only so much local officials can do to protect the eggs, which typically take 45 to 60 days to hatch, Viezbicke said.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just the dangers from local predators, such as coyotes, or from interfering humans. New hurricane swells and high tides are expected as soon as Monday of next week, Viezbicke said \u2013 and there\u2019s a risk of the extreme weather \u201cwashing away that part of the beach\u201d.<\/p>\n

Californians who spot sea turtles on a local beach should not interfere with them, and should keep at least 50 ft away, Adams, the aquarium veterinarian, advised. To advise authorities of a new turtle sighting, tell a lifeguard, or call Noaa\u2019s marine animal stranding hotline<\/a>, he recommended.<\/p>\n

Getting close to the turtles\u2019 fenced-off nesting spots is not a good idea, he said: \u201cPeople won\u2019t see anything.\u201d If locals want to observe live sea turtles in action, they can visit rescued turtles on display in rehabilitation tanks at an aquarium.<\/p>\n

Olive ridley sea turtles are one of the most abundant turtle species worldwide<\/a>, but are protected<\/a> under the US endangered species act<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Warmer ocean temperatures have led to sightings of all kinds of sea creatures that aren\u2019t typically spotted on the California coast, he noted, including different shark species, rays, sea horses and the venomous yellow-bellied sea snake.<\/p>\n

People should aim to adapt to shift in wildlife patterns, and, in general, keep their distance, Adams said, though new unexpected species present different potential risks.<\/p>\n

\u201cTurtles aren\u2019t particularly dangerous to humans. They can bite. They can slap with their flippers.
