OPENAI CEO SAM Altman has warned the UN Security Council that the rapid development of artificial intelligence \u201ccalls for extreme care\u201d, as some of the industry\u2019s biggest names addressed world leaders on the risks posed by the technology.<\/p>\n
Altman was joined by Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei and Hugging Face chief executive Cl\u00e9ment Delangue at a high-level meeting of the 15-member council in New York today.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe industry must not accept too much technological risk just because the benefits are too great and important to slow down,\u201d Altman told the council.<\/p>\n
He warned that increasingly capable and autonomous AI systems could develop faster than institutions are able to respond to them, or lead to power becoming concentrated in too few hands.<\/p>\n
Altman said OpenAI would attempt to walk a \u201cmiddle path\u201d as the technology develops.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t want to fall into the trap of blind optimism,\u201d he said, while also cautioning against falling into \u201cdoomerism\u201d.<\/p>\n
Amodei, meanwhile, said Anthropic was prepared to slow the release of increasingly powerful AI models if necessary.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will slow down as much as necessary in order to make sure that every successive AI technology that we release is actually safe,\u201d he said in a video address.<\/p>\n

He said increasingly powerful models would require \u201ceven more stringent standards of safety\u201d, including efforts to prevent the technology from being misused.<\/p>\n
The intervention comes amid a wider debate at this week\u2019s UN General Assembly over how rapidly developing AI should be governed.<\/p>\n
In his address on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres called for countries at the forefront of the technology to share information about emerging safety risks and cooperate on testing and safeguards.<\/p>\n
He urged countries to work towards a multilateral framework for managing AI risks, backed by \u201ccredible and independent oversight\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cArtificial intelligence must be shaped by humanity, with humanity, and for all humanity,\u201d Guterres said.<\/p>\n
His position contrasted with that outlined by US President Donald Trump in his address to the General Assembly on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Trump said the US \u201ctotally rejects\u201d attempts to create what he described as a \u201cglobalist scheme\u201d to control AI and reiterated his opposition to regulation that he believes could hamper the industry\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the Industrial Revolution,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
