Otter rescued by Killarney Gardai<\/p>\n
Two Gardai came to the rescue of a young otter that had somehow ended up in the centre of Killarney town, wandering in and out of traffic and in great danger of being run over.<\/p>\n
Officers John Curtin and Shane Lehane were quickly on the scene when members of the public reported the lost animal in the centre of the busy tourist town.<\/p>\n
The otter had even wandered into a shop on the high street where staff managed to lock it into a back room and call for help.<\/p>\n
The two Gardai were helped by local animal welfare volunteers who managed to get the animal into an animal carrier and transported it to the nearby River Luane. They shared the video with their friends in the Wildlife Rescue Cork group<\/a> – the group are (BTW) having a big charity fundraiser, an 80s disco in Seventy Seven Grand Parade next month and you can get tickets and support them here.<\/a><\/p>\n Garda Curtain and his colleague, from Killarney station – were able to transport the otter to the nearest river when it was released safe and well into more suitable surroundings.<\/p>\n The volunteers would normally carry out a health check on an animal in this sort of situation – but the otter was ‘a little feisty’ and seemed to be fighting fit, so the decision was taken to release him at a good spot where he could swim off and find his friends.<\/p>\n Wildlife Rescue Cork said: “Huge thank you to these 3 legends for helping this poor lost soul – love to see such compassion!”<\/p>\n
