Pope \u200cLeo XIV<\/a> on Monday said concerns that artificial intelligence<\/a> could destroy the world \u200care not \u201cfake news\u201d and should be taken seriously, in an apparent rebuke \u200bof US president Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

The first US pope, who has warned of the dangers of AI throughout his 16-month papacy, \u200balso directly criticised technology CEOs who argued there should be no \u2060guardrails on the technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think that the \u200cconcerns \u200craised \u200bby many of the experts, specialists in AI, should be taken seriously,\u201d the \u2060pontiff said in a \u200bpress conference on his flight \u200bback to Rome after a four-day trip to \u200cFrance. \u201cI don\u2019t think that that \u200bis fake news, as some have said.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump told the \u2060UN General Assembly \u2060last week \u200bthat he believed fears about the dangers to humanity from AI were a \u201choax\u201d.<\/p>\n

The pope said he had read on Monday that the head of chipmaker Nvidia<\/a> had announced there could be a way to insert guardrails into certain \u200cAI models. But \u2060he expressed scepticism, adding: \u201cHe\u2019s the same one, however, that says there should be no limits placed \u200cand no government regulation.\u201d<\/p>\n
