Built for all-terrain callouts

It’s an upgrade that could make that vital difference to someone in need of urgent care – as a fundraiser has bought a much-needed vehicle for an amazing Cork charity.

The East Cork Rapid Response (ECRR) team’s new Land Rover Defender was purchased after over €92k was raised at a Midleton barbecue event during the summer. The heavy-duty vehicle is capable of carrying a range of equipment and is well-suited to driving on difficult terrain.

And for this team, that’s exactly what they need as callouts can take them to a range of hard-to-access locations, from the deep countryside to cliffsides. The campaign came after ECRR’s old vehicle started having engine trouble earlier this year, leading to periods where the charity’s ‘one-man army’, Dr. Hugh Doran, couldn’t respond to incidents.

Over the coming weeks, vehicle will have the lighting, signage and all the necessary equipment fitted onto it. All of the remaining funds not used for the Land Rover go towards the charity’s running costs, medical supplies and upgrading equipment when needed.

The ECCR team shared a special thank you to everyone who turned up to the fundraiser at Midleton’s O’Neill’s bar in July, as well as all the businesses that donated and sponsored. The team’s original goal was to raise €50k at the barbeque, but this target was smashed as the final total hit €92,300.

The event was organised by Sean Collins, who managed to get everything lined up for the night in just six weeks.

The charity added: “This vehicle will play such an important role in allowing us to continue providing a rapid emergency response to people in our community. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped make this possible, and we cannot wait to show you all our new vehicle once it has been fully fitted out!

“From all of us at East Cork Rapid Response – thank you. We couldn’t do it without you.”

The East Cork Rapid Response (ECRR) group was officially founded in 2007 but has been rushing to callouts in the Rebel County for over 30 years – first started by Hugh’s father, Jim, in the 1970s.
