{"id":640957,"date":"2026-09-30T21:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T21:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/640957\/"},"modified":"2026-09-30T21:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T21:24:08","slug":"cag-more-than-2700-speeding-offences-invalidated-after-camera-defects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/640957\/","title":{"rendered":"C&#038;AG: More than 2,700 speeding offences invalidated after camera defects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 2,700 offending drivers avoided penalty points and fines in 2025 due to issues with two static speed cameras in Mayo and Kilkenny.<\/p>\n<p>An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na missed out on \u20ac445,000 in fines due to the defects, according to the annual report from the Office of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/c-ag-report_topic-5275751.html\">Comptroller and Auditor General<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ireland\u2019s fleet of speed cameras is owned by private company GoSafe and contracted to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/an-garda-s%C3%ADoch%C3%A1na_topic-5076620.html\">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In February 2025, garda\u00ed identified issues with a camera on the N17 which had been installed two months earlier. The camera, which had issued \u20ac300,000 in fines to 1,871 drivers, was found to lack valid certification of calibration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Refunds were issued to all drivers who had paid their fines, with penalty points also removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Kilkenny camera errors<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In June 2025, another issue was identified <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41882914.html\">with a camera on the N25 in Kilkenny<\/a>. The camera had been challenged by an offender over the validity of its location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The offence location for the speeding incidents was recorded as \u2018N25, Ballynamona, Mullinavat, Kilkenny\u2019. The camera was instead located in Ballynamona, Glenmore, a townland 12km away from Mullinavat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The N25 does not run through Mullinavat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The listing of the incorrect townland on the fixed charge notice rendered 914 speeding charges, valued at \u20ac146,000, invalid. The fines were issued between May 30 and June 30, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">GoSafe\u2019s private contract with An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na did not include provisions to recoup the losses recorded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAn Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na has taken steps to strengthen controls over the static camera and FCPN systems,\u201d the report from the State auditor said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHowever, there is scope for formalisation of procedures to help avoid situations where motorists detected speeding are able to avoid the appropriate statutory financial and licence point penalties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">New checks for speed cameras<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The report said GoSafe is now conducting daily compliance checks to ensure that every camera is operating with certified calibration status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">New cameras must now be reviewed by An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na\u2019s Office for Safety Camera Management to confirm their \u201cintegrity\u201d before they are added to Garda IT systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na paid GoSafe roughly \u20ac23.6 million for the provision of speed cameras in 2025.
