Managers receiving payments in the GAA is nothing new, but it seems as though the practice has moved to a different level in the club games in recent years. That certainly seems to be the case in Monaghan judging by one figure shared by Dick Clerkin in recent days.

Coaches receiving some sort of expenses has long been part and parcel of the GAA, which is fair enough considering the amount of time they are required to put in over the course of a season. In saying that, some of those recruited at club level are now receiving huge sums for filling what is supposed to be a part-time gig.

Monaghan legend Dick Clerkin has provided one such example.

Monaghan GAA club manager spend revealed

We have all heard stories of club managers being given massive pay packages in recent years, something that is especially prevalent at senior level in some of the bigger counties.

It seems has now seeped through to lesser levels as well.

Speaking on the Indo GAA podcast, Dick Clerkin revealed the figure he heard one intermediate club in his native county of Monaghan have been forking out for their coaching ticket this season.

We can’t ignore the big dollar sign element in the room. That’s going to continue to grow and become more regularised than it is now. It’s a massive driver and incentive.

You can say what you like, if someone comes and rings your doorbell and puts an offer on the table it’s very hard to turn that down.

Equally, when you’re in it it’s very hard to get out of it, because you’re now accustomed to a very attractive level of compensation coming into the house that’s very hard to replace.

I can see why people go from county to county and club to club because the lifestyle dictates it…

I know of an intermediate club in Monaghan, I was told over the weekend and nearly dropped, they’re paying €250 a night, three or four nights a week to their coaching ticket.

I said ‘what, that’s crazy?’ I was just doing the numbers in my head. That’s sort of standard, it’s not unusual across the board.

And that’s intermediate, it’s at the lower end of the scale.

Monaghan club following worrying GAA trend

A figure of up to €1,000 a week for coaching alone is certainly a huge commitment for a club, especially one not even playing in the senior ranks in their own county.

There is clearly not just a Monaghan issue, with teams up and down the country finding themselves in a similar situation. Many may well be worried about being left behind by their rivals were they to refuse to fork out for outside coaches.

It’s a race to the bottom that the GAA will have to look at halting.

Managers receiving payments in the GAA is nothing new, but it seems as though the practice has moved…

[9
61,60,3773,112
post-648008","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-monaghan","tag-sports
["GET
