Television writer and producer Chuck Lorre<\/a> is reflecting on his less-than-positive experience working with Roseanne Barr<\/a> on early seasons of the sitcom \u201cRoseanne.\u201d <\/p>\n

Chatting with actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson<\/a> on Tuesday\u2019s episode of the \u201cDinner\u2019s on Me\u201d podcast<\/a>, Lorre described his time with Barr as \u201cmalice,\u201d which he partly blamed on her years on the stand-up circuit. <\/p>\n

\u201cRoseanne hated that there were writers, fundamentally hated that other people wrote words that she would say,\u201d he explained. \u201cShe was a stand-up comedian. She made herself a superstar based on her words, her writing. Then transition to a television show where [you] can\u2019t do it alone. It\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to note: \u201cThat transition was not going to happen, so there was this built-in animosity between Rosie and the writing staff, any writing staff … the premise of other people putting words in a stand-up comedian\u2019s mouth is fundamentally flawed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRoseanne\u201d aired on<\/a> ABC from 1988 to 1997. Lorre, a New York native, joined the show\u2019s writing team for two seasons, starting in 1990. <\/p>\n

After departing \u201cRoseanne,\u201d Lorre created his first sitcom, \u201cFrannie\u2019s Turn<\/a>,\u201d which was canceled before its premiere season aired in full. His next project, \u201cGrace Under Fire<\/a>,\u201d turned out to be a smash, and he went on to create or co-create several iconic series, including \u201cThe Big Bang Theory<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

In 2011, Barr took credit for having \u201cfired\u201d Lorre, claiming in a since-deleted blog post <\/a>that his lines \u201ccould choke a fucking horse, and render any actor who recites them stone cold soul dead,\u201d according to Deadline. <\/p>\n

The following year, Lorre described the behind-the-scenes environment of \u201cRoseanne\u201d as \u201cvery volatile,\u201d noting, \u201cYou were told the rules as you went along.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy first script almost got me fired \u2015 she hated it, she just hated it,\u201d he explained. \u201cShe had a pretty good instinct for glibness. She wanted to write an honest comedy \u2015 you know, about what real families say and do, how they treat each other. The glibness got burned out of you really quickly, or you were gone. And it was quite an education.\u201d<\/p>\n

The success of \u201cRoseanne\u201d spurred the creation of a revival series<\/a> featuring Barr and most of her castmates, including Sara Gilbert, John Goodman, Michael Fishman, Lecy Goranson and Laurie Metcalf. <\/p>\n

\"TheThe \u201cRoseanne\u201d revival reunited most of the original cast, but was canceled amid its premiere season after Barr made a racist remark about former White House advisor Valerie Jarrett, who is a Black woman. <\/p>\n

The new show debuted in 2018 to massive ratings, but was canceled<\/a> just weeks after its premiere when Barr made a racist remark<\/a> about former White House advisor Valerie Jarrett<\/a>, who served under President Barack Obama<\/a> and is a Black woman, on X, then known as Twitter. <\/p>\n

Gilbert, Goodman, Fishman, Goranson and Metcalf went on to star in a spinoff series, \u201cThe Conners<\/a>,\u201d which aired from 2018 to 2025. <\/p>\n

An outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump<\/a>, Barr did not appear on \u201cThe Conners,\u201d but has nonetheless maintained an incendiary social media presence. In an interview on the \u201cCan\u2019t Be Censored\u201d podcast<\/a> last month, the comedian said she\u2019s completed work on a new TV series which she described as \u201ca modern-day fable\u201d and \u201cthe greatest fucking show that\u2019s ever been.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the show I should\u2019ve been able to make if everybody wasn\u2019t a confederacy of dunces,\u201d she said, though she did not divulge the series\u2019 title nor detail any plans for its distribution.<\/p>\n

Lorre will unveil his memoir<\/a>, appropriately titled \u201cSitcom,\u201d next week. Elsewhere in the \u201cDinner\u2019s on Me\u201d chat, he said he was willing to face the challenges of working on \u201cRoseanne\u201d given the many setbacks he\u2019d faced while attempting to establish himself in Hollywood. <\/p>\n

\u201cI navigated because I\u2019d had… 15, 20 years of poverty and health issues and all sorts of stuff, and I was not going to go back,\u201d he said. \u201cUnder no circumstances was I going to go back to scrambling to pay the rent. My life prior to that is why I put up with it.\u201d <\/p>\n
