It was his greatest night in red.

For as long as tales are told about the exploits of United, Roy’s performance amid the smoke flares and drumming of the Stadio Delle Alpi is one that will stay with me for ever and deserves to be passed down through the generations.

Ferguson had even more fulsome praise in a video released to promote the book on the Manchester United website:

Sometimes, you need one player to inspire the rest. I would say that Keane inspired Man United that day.

He got the first goal from a header from a corner-kick. We then were on top. Dwight Yorke scored again to make it 2-2, it meant that we were going through, they had to beat us then.

They put Zidane into midfield, which gave us a problem of picking him up. That was the role that Keane took on on that particular day. I’m sure he’ll look back and probably say that it was his finest game for Manchester United.

I think that myself, on that particular day, because of the importance of us to get to a European final. On top of that, he got booked and he couldn’t play in the final. But it didn’t deter him.

He carried his role out very, very well. I would say that that was his moment for Manchester United.

Keane’s efforts at the Stade delle Alpi have clearly left a massive impression on Ferguson, as this is not the first time the 84-year-old has spoken about his admiration for it.

Ferguson previously described it as “the most emphatic display of selflessness I have seen on a football field.”

Pounding over every blade of grass, competing as if he would rather die of exhaustion than lose, he inspired all around him. I felt such an honour to be associated with such a player.

It remains to be seen, though, whether or not these quotes will go down well with Keane.

When Ferguson’s previous quotes describing Keane’s display as an “emphatic display of selflessness” were put to the former Ireland captain, Keane revealed he felt “insulted” by the insinuation that he should feel honoured to hear them.

Stuff like that kinda almost insults me.

What am I supposed to do, give up? Not cover every blade of grass? Not do my best for my teammates, not do my best for my club?

To be honest, I actually get offended when people throw quotes like that at me, as if I’m supposed to be honoured by it.

It’s like praising a postman for delivering the letters. He’s supposed to, isn’t he? It’s his job. My job is to try and win football matches for Man United.

Roy Keane has regularly spoken harshly about his own role in the 1999 treble, having missed the Champions League final through suspension after being taken off early in the FA Cup decider through injury.

Couple that with his infamously strained relationship with Alex Ferguson, and it’s hard to imagine a world in which Keane will be greatly enthused by the latest praise from his former manager.

In his new book, ‘Games Of My Life’, former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has doubled down on…

[9
61,60,271,112
post-649029","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-roy-keane","tag-sports
["GET
