Blue inhalers – medically known as short-acting beta2 agonist or SABA – have long been a lifeline for millions of people with respiratory conditions.

The ‘reliever’ inhaler contains salbutamol (such as Ventolin), providing instant relief when someone is struggling to breathe. It functions by rapidly opening airways and relaxing muscles during asthma attacks, wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness brought on by asthma or COPD.

However, advances in medical knowledge mean that official guidelines now indicate that those depending solely on a blue inhaler are no longer receiving the most effective treatment for their condition. Pharmacist Raj R Patel, who posts on TikTok as Pharmacist Health Raj, is now cautioning those using the device that they may need to take steps to address this, reports the Mirror.

He explains: “If you’re still using your blue inhaler on its own during the winter, that’s now a red flag. I’ve been telling you this for ages as a pharmacist – blue inhalers like salbutamol work really fast. They open up your airwaves.

Most people with asthma should not be using a blue inhaler on its own(Image: Getty)

“But most of you don’t ever get told this. They don’t treat the inflammation caused by your asthma, so you might feel better in the short term, but underneath, your asthma could be getting worse.”

Raj adds: “New Nice guidance links overuse with more hospital admissions, more attacks, and higher risk of death. If you need it more regularly, that’s not normal asthma. That’s full control.

“Ask your doctor about combination inhaler, one that relieves the symptoms and one that treats the inflammation. Whatever you do, don’t throw your inhaler away, but don’t rely on it either.”

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that affects the airways responsible for carrying air in and out of the lungs, causing them to become inflamed and swollen. This narrowing of the airways means that less air is able to pass through to and from the lungs.

According to The Asthma Society of Ireland, Ireland has one of the highest rates of asthma in the world – some 450,000 people in the country currently have asthma and approximately 900,000 people will experience the condition at some stage of their life.

The condition triggers symptoms such as wheezing, breathlessness, persistent coughing, and chest tightness.

On occasion, symptoms can deteriorate rapidly, resulting in an asthma attack, which can be set off by a broad range of factors, including allergens, physical exercise, or even shifts in the weather.

<img decoding="async" alt="Salbutamol helps relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Symptoms include coughing, wheezing and feeling breathless.

What are the current NICE guidelines for treatment?

NICE, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, currently advises patients to move away from the traditional blue inhaler, which it states “masks the problem without fixing it”. Instead, it recommends switching to combination inhalers that not only alleviate symptoms but also address the underlying inflammation responsible for triggering attacks in the first place.

Under existing guidelines, individuals aged 12 and above who receive a new diagnosis or require enhanced treatment are expected to transition to combination inhalers which utilise an inhaled steroid alongside a long-acting beta2 agonist (LABA) medication called formoterol within a single device. These inhalers address inflammation and prevent flare-ups while simultaneously delivering immediate relief.

It stated that people who maintain good management of their condition should seldom require their reliever – or rescue – inhaler and ought to be capable of leading normal lives with minimal or no symptoms. It further notes that excessive use of the blue inhaler “is linked to a higher risk of attacks, hospital admissions and death”.

Specialist highlights ‘dangerous sign’

Reliever inhalers, which most people will recognise as the blue inhalers, if over-used, are strongly linked with severe asthma exacerbations and asthma-related deaths.

An asthma exacerbation is an episode of progressive worsening of symptoms of asthma, including shortness of breath, wheezing, cough, and chest tightness and it can progress to a severe asthma attack.

Using three or more reliever inhalers a year indicates a person is at risk of an severe asthma exacerbation, while the use of 12 or more a year is an indication someone is at risk of an asthma-related death, according to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA).

Recent research conducted by hmR Ireland found that three in ten sufferers use more than 12 reliever inhalers a year.

Experts suggest this represents a concerning indicator.

Dr Amina Al-Yassin, a GP and clinical lead for children and young people’s services at Brent Integrated Care Partnership, explained: “They make people feel better, but only briefly. We now know that over time, they are likely to make asthma worse. Seeing a blue inhaler used alone is now a dangerous sign to me.”

Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.

Blue inhalers have been a staple for millions of people with asthma for decades – but new NICE…

[10
22744,103,61,60
post-650922","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-asthma","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland
["GET
