Much-needed repairs have been completed at one of the worst spots for serious car crashes in Ireland.<\/p>\n
The major roadworks at the Ballybeg Bends, located just south of Buttevant on the N20, wrapped up yesterday, well ahead of the expected October 16th finish. It came as part of wider repairs for the full N20 road, which runs from Cork city<\/a>, up through Mallow and Charleville, and into Limerick.<\/p>\n Drivers on the busy route faced traffic <\/a>delays and diversions in recent weeks as crews filled potholes, added new markings and removed old, failed sections of road. Now however, all repairs have been completed and traffic is flowing smoothly once again.<\/p>\n It was a much-needed project for the N20 – particularly the Ballybeg Bends section, which has seen a number of fatal and very serious road traffic incidents<\/a> over the years. Last year, new safety signage was also installed around the Ballybeg Bends<\/a> to alert drivers of the sharp turns in the area.<\/p>\n The N20 has previously been rated by the National Roads Authority as one of the most dangerous roads in Ireland. Figures taken from between 2016 and 2018 showed accidents on the N20 were four times more likely to be fatal than the national average.<\/p>\n Cllr. Tony O’Shea welcomed news that the project has been completed, saying the road was in “quite poor condition” last winter. He said: “N20 reopens to traffic again… A super job done on the resurfacing of the Ballybeg bends! Thanks to the contractor, the crew and Cork County Council for progressing these works ahead of the winter months.<\/p>\n “Thank you to residents, businesses and road users for your patience and cooperation. A special thanks to residents along the diversion route through Doneraile for bearing with the extra traffic and disruption.”<\/p>\n Over the past few months, works have been carried out at a number of known problem areas for Cork drivers. This includes another notorious accident blackspot in the county – Ballinrea Cross outside Carrigaline.<\/a><\/p>\n Carrigaline Fire Service previously had to issue a warning about this junction,<\/a> where four cars were written off in crashes in just a few days earlier this year.<\/p>\n
