Donald Trump<\/a> has announced an energy ceasefire between Ukraine<\/a> and Russia<\/a>, apparently without consulting with Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a> who said the deal to stop long-range attacks was \u201cnews to me\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a social media post, the United States<\/a> president claimed the two sides had reached an agreement. \u201cEffective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!\u201d he wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

He offered no further details. Zelenskiy said he was surprised by the announcement, but would agree to it if Vladimir Putin<\/a> did the same. \u201cIf President Trump negotiated it with Putin \u2013 please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready and we will accept it,\u201d Zelenskiy told the Axios website.<\/p>\n

Both Britain and Canada said they would back an energy ceasefire.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia has intensified its strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure over the weekend,\u201d Andy Burnham, the British prime minister, said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an attack on Ukrainian civilians, plunging them into cold and darkness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK strongly supports President Trump\u2019s call today for a sustained energy ceasefire to start now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI discussed this with Volodymyr Zelenskiy yesterday: Ukraine is ready if Russia stops its attacks. This is the best route to get energy and fuel back into world markets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Separately, reports on Sunday said the US was threatening to stop the procurement system that provided \u200cUkraine with weapons in order to press Kyiv to halt its deep \u200bstrikes on Russian energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Officials in Europe, who received calls from US officials \u200bor were briefed on them, said the US was lobbying European \u2060capitals and Kyiv to try to end the attacks \u200con \u200cRussian \u200boil refineries, the Financial Times reported.<\/p>\n

The message from the US included threats to cut \u200coff intelligence sharing and Purl (the \u200bPrioritised Ukraine Requirements List) mechanism for procuring US weapons for Ukraine, \u2060the report said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey \u2060are calling \u200bKyiv\u2009. … They are calling everyone [in Europe],\u201d said an official who received a call from a US defence official.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Ukraine\u2019s president had rebuffed Trump\u2019s demand made on Saturday that Kyiv stop bombing Russian oil refineries. Zelenskiy said that Moscow has to first halt its own \u201cbrutal\u201d attacks on his country\u2019s energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Any deal to end long-range drone strikes by Ukraine on targets inside Russia would have to be \u201creciprocal\u201d, he said. It should be backed by \u201creal guarantees\u201d \u2013 meaning punitive measures against Moscow from Ukraine\u2019s allies, including the US.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time Trump has announced an energy ceasefire deal. He made the same claim in September, which turned out to be untrue. Ukrainian officials said Russia was still bombing Ukraine on Sunday, with several energy sites damaged.<\/p>\n

The fast-moving row between Washington and Kyiv began on Friday when Trump announced he was lifting sanctions on Russian diesel exports<\/a>. He said the move would reduce global and domestic fuel prices before next month\u2019s US midterm elections.<\/p>\n

A furious Zelenskiy called the decision \u201cweak\u201d and said it would generate \u201cbillions\u201d in extra revenue for Putin, enabling him to wage war \u201ceven more intensely\u201d. An equally irate Trump warned that Zelenskiy should \u201cdamn well stop\u201d hitting Russian refineries. Ukraine needed a \u201cnew leader\u201d, he said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Responding to Trump, Zelenskiy said it was up to Ukrainians to choose \u201cone or another leader\u201d. He told ABC News he was willing to accept Trump\u2019s demands and to organise elections, but only if Putin agreed to a \u201ctotal\u201d 60-day ceasefire.<\/p>\n

The bitter public feud is the most serious between the US and Ukraine since last year, when Trump berated Zelenskiy in the Oval Office<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The New York Times has reported that US officials have offered the Kremlin lucrative economic incentives in exchange for a ceasefire. They reportedly include releasing billions in Russian sovereign assets that are frozen. The Trump administration also revisited a plan to sell parts of Russia\u2019s energy company, Lukoil. The multibillion deal would benefit Middle Eastern investors, the paper reported, some with \u201cbusiness ties\u201d to US negotiators.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Trump berated Zelenskiy and said he had refused to make a deal to end the fighting. In response, Ukraine\u2019s president laid the blame for Europe\u2019s biggest war since 1945 on \u201cRussia and Russia alone\u201d. \u201cIt is possible to stop strikes on energy infrastructure as early as today, but Putin does not want to do so,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian officials point out that the White House is demanding Kyiv give up its most effective weapon, without demanding any corresponding concessions from Russia. In recent weeks, Kyiv has dealt a major blow to the Kremlin\u2019s economy, striking oil complexes, warehouses and data centres.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s own bombing campaign has been relentless. Zelenskiy said Moscow\u2019s aerial campaign involved thousands of aerial bombs and jet-powered drones. It continued \u201cunabated\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Russian attacks killed \u200csix people in two Ukrainian cities \u200bon Sunday, including a strike on a \u200bgrocery store in Kharkiv, Ukraine\u2019s \u2060second-largest city, where three people \u200cdied \u200cand \u200b20 were injured, officials \u2060said. Regional \u200bgovernor Oleh \u200bSyniehubov said two children \u200bwere among the injured.<\/p>\n

In a separate \u200cattack in \u2060western Ukraine, officials said a Russian strike \u200ckilled three people.<\/p>\n

The head of Ukraine\u2019s foreign affairs committee, Oleksandr Merezhko, said Trump\u2019s \u201cbullying\u201d demand for Zelenskiy to quit had strengthened him at home \u201cparadoxically\u201d, after recent damaging corruption scandals. \u201cPutin\u2019s plan is to decapitate Zelenskiy and remove him as a wartime leader. Trump is siding with Putin,\u201d Merezhko said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m afraid that behind this situation is Trump\u2019s worldview. He wants to do business with Putin. For him, Ukraine seems like an obstacle to be removed. Both Trump and Putin wish to pressure us into capitulation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referring to the notorious 1939 agreement between Nazi Germany and the USSR, Merezhko said: \u201cWe are moving to a new Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and to a world of strongmen and spheres of influence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Merezhko said Ukraine would continue to destroy enemy oil refineries, against US wishes, because these funded Russia\u2019s war machine and he acknowledged that a cut-off of US intelligence sharing with Kyiv \u2013 threatened by the Trump administration \u2013 would \u201cblind\u201d Ukraine\u2019s air defence systems. \u201cThis would be an act of complicity with Putin\u2019s genocide. It would mean more dead civilians and dead children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian negotiators had been meeting in Florida with their US counterparts, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, when Trump announced the US was lifting sanctions on Russian diesel.
