{"id":652179,"date":"2026-10-12T06:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-10-12T06:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/652179\/"},"modified":"2026-10-12T06:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-10-12T06:14:13","slug":"something-seriously-wrong-with-system-if-drugs-cannot-be-analysed-before-december-says-cork-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/652179\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Something seriously wrong with system&#8217; if drugs cannot be analysed before December, says Cork judge\u00a0 \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">A District Court Judge refused an application to adjourn a suspected drug-dealing case until March 2027 saying that he would put it back for two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Judge David Waters commented that there is \u201csomething seriously wrong with the system\u201d if the State cannot forensically examine drugs in that period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The case concerns a woman facing drugs charges arising out of the alleged seizure of cannabis at Lee Road in Cork in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Maryanne Hegarty, of Ros Ard Upper, Glanmire, Cork, is charged with possession of cannabis and having the drugs for the purpose of sale or supply to others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Both charges relate to the alleged seizure of \u20ac20,000 worth of cannabis at Atkins Hall, Lee Road, Cork, on August 19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Sergeant Gear\u00f3id Davis previously said that even though there were no directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions in the case, it was unlikely to be dealt with at district court level, given the amount of drugs allegedly involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Sergeant Aisling Murphy had asked for the adjournment until March 2027 to allow time for forensic analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">However, the judge said this would be too long an adjournment and he said that he would adjourn the matter until December 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">He then commented: \u201cIf the State cannot inspect drugs between now and December 14 there is something seriously wrong with the system, in a case where it is alleged that the quantity is \u20ac20,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Judge Waters has commented in a number of drugs cases about the amount of time taken for forensic examinations to be carried out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A District Court Judge refused an application to adjourn a suspected drug-dealing case until March 2027 saying that&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":652180,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[2246,79,54,61,60,43],"class_list":["post-652179","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-cork-court","tag-cork-news","tag-courts","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/652179","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=652179"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/652179\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/652180"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=652179"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=652179"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=652179"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
