Known as Samhain, we believe that Ireland is the real origin of the spooky season.

With all our castles and beautiful waterfall trails, one can only wonder if there just might be some truth in the spiritual awakenings that can occur when the veil between life and death is at its thinnest.

We all have a morbid fascination and curiosity this time of year and friends who are sceptical about the spiritual awakenings that can occur. Someone who believes in ghosts may interpret ambiguous evidence as supernatural.

But sceptics can also have their own expectations. They may instinctively search for a conventional explanation because they don’t want to accept the supernatural explanation.

Stories, photographs and videos that initially appeared to demonstrate supernatural activity have sometimes later been explained through things such as photography errors, hoaxes, optical illusions, environmental conditions or misidentification. That history can make people more cautious when presented with new evidence.

If you’re looking for a day out with a spooky thrill thrown in, then look no further than the following top five places in Ireland that are definitely cursed.

5. Dunluce Castle, Co. Antrim – a castle lost to seaCredit: commons.wikimedia.org

The spectacular ruins have a particularly dark history, including the story of the castle kitchen collapsing into the sea during a storm, killing several servants.

Local folklore has also attached ghosts and other supernatural stories to the ruins. Despite the rumours this is a beautiful place in Northern Ireland for a daytrip with some Game of Thrones connections.

Address: 87 Dunluce Rd, Bushmills BT57 8UY

4. The secluded woodland and waterfall have long attracted ghost stories, supernatural tales and legends of the Devil.

It’s a great choice if you want something more atmospheric than a famous haunted building. If you are thinking of exploring some haunted trails in Ireland this one is good place to start for the spooky walks category.

Address: Ballymaghroe, Co. This can be particularly useful for exploring belief, superstition and scepticism, around Halloween.

We in our daily lives experience a high volume of social media and images on these platforms but nothing truly gets the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end than what the imagination can conjure up in itself.
