{"id":65397,"date":"2025-10-07T18:30:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T18:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/65397\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T18:30:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T18:30:08","slug":"fai-receives-e3m-in-budget-to-build-on-progress-of-league-of-ireland-academies-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/65397\/","title":{"rendered":"FAI receives \u20ac3m in budget to build on progress of League of Ireland academies \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/football-association-of-ireland-fai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/football-association-of-ireland-fai\/\">Football Association of Ireland<\/a> (FAI) will receive an additional \u20ac3 million as part of Budget 2026 to help professionalise 26 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/league-of-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/league-of-ireland\/\">League of Ireland<\/a> (LOI) academies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The FAI already receives \u20ac6 million per year from the Government as part of a memorandum of understanding which runs until 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The LOI department within the FAI will now meet Sport Ireland to decide how to allocate the funding. However, league director Mark Scanlon previously revealed 81 per cent of the \u20ac3 million will go directly to the clubs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cAcademy systems across Europe are getting much younger,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/podcasts\/inside-business\/should-we-put-more-money-into-irish-soccer\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/podcasts\/inside-business\/should-we-put-more-money-into-irish-soccer\/\">Scanlon told The Irish Times\u2019 Inside Business podcast<\/a>. \u201cThat means they are playing first-team football much younger and that increases their value, which gives us an opportunity to create a long-term sustainable industry here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">That process has already begun, with St Patrick\u2019s Athletic teenager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2025\/02\/04\/mason-melia-smashes-irish-transfer-record-to-join-tottenham-from-st-pats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2025\/02\/04\/mason-melia-smashes-irish-transfer-record-to-join-tottenham-from-st-pats\/\">Mason Melia moving to Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> in January for an initial fee of \u20ac1.9 million, while Shamrock Rovers have sold 16-year-old winger Victor Ozhianvuna to Arsenal for a figure believed to be \u20ac2 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The league\u2019s original request of \u20ac10 million to create 81 full-time jobs in academies across the country came in response to post-Brexit rules which stop Irish players joining UK clubs before they turn 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Following detailed discussions with Minister for Sport Patrick O\u2019Donovan, and his predecessor, the \u20ac10 million request was reduced to \u20ac8 million before a final appeal of \u20ac4.45 million was asked of the department last month following a Government-funded audit of all 26 LOI academies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">There are currently just 10 full-time employees working across in the academy system, with St Patrick\u2019s Athletic, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2025\/05\/03\/behind-the-scenes-at-st-patricks-athletics-academy-where-the-next-mason-melia-may-have-arrived\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2025\/05\/03\/behind-the-scenes-at-st-patricks-athletics-academy-where-the-next-mason-melia-may-have-arrived\/\">employing coaches in other roles within the club<\/a> to ensure full-time status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The league hoped to create three full-time roles \u2013 a director of football, lead-coach and an administrator \u2013 in each of the 26 academies, but this will be reduced to one or possibly two full-time positions per club under the \u20ac3 million allocation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"FAI chief executive David Courell and Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgr&#xED;msson. Photograph: Ryan Byrne\/Inpho <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Under the \u20ac4.45 million request, the FAI planned to give each academy \u20ac140,000, but that figure will now drop to around \u20ac93,000 in light of the reduced overall sum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The 26 academies are Athlone Town, Bohemians, Bray Wanderers, CK United, Cork City, Cobh Ramblers, Derry City, Drogheda United, Dundalk, Finn Harps, Galway United, Kerry FC, Limerick, Longford Town, Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers, St Patrick\u2019s Athletic, Treaty United, UCD AFC, Waterford, Wexford, Klub Kildare, Mayo FC, DLR Waves (women), Peamount United (women).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Following the announcement of the budget, the FAI and LOI thanked Government ministers \u201cfor their continued support and belief in Irish football\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThis vital multi-annual investment marks a crucial step in building the modern, professional academy system Irish football needs to compete internationally and benefit communities nationwide,\u201d a statement from the FAI added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Negotiations with an aim to increasing academy funding year-on-year will continue, with the best-performing academies (based on annual audits) to receive additional funding. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Under the FAI\u2019s initial plan, led by the league\u2019s academy manager Will Clarke, it was envisaged that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2025\/04\/09\/fai-warns-of-brexit-impact-shrinking-irelands-talent-pool\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2025\/04\/09\/fai-warns-of-brexit-impact-shrinking-irelands-talent-pool\/\">clubs would not require any government funding<\/a> after 2037.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Future funding of all FAI projects was brought into question by the minister last week after FAI chief executive David Courell declined an invitation to appear before the Oireachtas sports committee to discuss safeguarding issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">However, following a meeting of the FAI board, the decision was reversed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2025\/09\/24\/dail-committee-questions-why-fai-didnt-act-on-concerns-before-documentary-on-alleged-abuse-was-aired\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/soccer\/2025\/09\/24\/dail-committee-questions-why-fai-didnt-act-on-concerns-before-documentary-on-alleged-abuse-was-aired\/\">Courell appeared before the committee alongside his senior leadership team<\/a> on September 24th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Budget 2026 also allocated \u20ac10.8 million in additional funding to Sport Ireland, of which \u20ac2 million will go towards increasing core funding for national governing bodies and local sports partnerships, while \u20ac500,000 will support legacy programmes and events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The GAA will receive \u20ac250,000 in additional core funding and \u20ac733,000 which will go towards the association\u2019s aims to grow hurling in non-traditional areas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"GPA chief executive Tom Parsons. Photograph: Stephen McCarthy\/Sportsfile <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) will also receive \u20ac1.6 million to support intercounty players, bringing its total player fund to \u20ac7.2 million. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The GPA welcomed the 28 per cent bump, stating the additional funds will increase the average grant per player to \u20ac1,800.
