{"id":654777,"date":"2026-10-14T19:38:09","date_gmt":"2026-10-14T19:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/654777\/"},"modified":"2026-10-14T19:38:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-14T19:38:09","slug":"state-funding-decision-on-weight-loss-jabs-could-be-months-away-as-hse-weighs-multibillion-euro-cost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/654777\/","title":{"rendered":"State funding decision on weight loss jabs could be months away as HSE weighs multibillion-euro cost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE HSE HAS said a decision on whether to publicly fund a number of GLP-1 medications, commonly referred to as \u201cweight loss jabs\u201d, could take some time, with further discussions needed over the potential impact on the health budget.<\/p>\n<p>Applications for reimbursement of several drugs are currently being considered through the HSE\u2019s assessment process, which examines clinical benefits, cost-effectiveness and budgetary implications.<\/p>\n<p>The HSE said its Corporate Pharmaceutical Unit would negotiate pricing with manufacturers, with potentially several meetings of its Drugs Group required before a recommendation is made to senior management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe State\u2019s approach to these drugs also raises important matters of health policy,\u201d an HSE spokesperson said, adding that discussions with the Department of Health and other stakeholders would be needed over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>The update comes as the HSE considers whether to reimburse Mounjaro, a prescription medication used to treat obesity.<\/p>\n<p>An application for reimbursing Mounjaro for diabetes is also being considered.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Donal O\u2019Shea, clinical lead of the HSE\u2019s National Obesity Programme, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/mounjaro-hse-funding-ireland-7190007-Oct2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">described the potential benefits of wider access to the drug as \u201ctransformative\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, he warned that providing treatment to the large number of potentially eligible patients could cost the State billions of euros.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the costs, O\u2019Shea noted this would be money \u201cmassively well spent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is you\u2019re spending money, billions potentially, to save money, and you never see the saved money in the health service.
