{"id":655685,"date":"2026-10-15T17:10:08","date_gmt":"2026-10-15T17:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/655685\/"},"modified":"2026-10-15T17:10:08","modified_gmt":"2026-10-15T17:10:08","slug":"man-and-woman-arrested-over-waterford-petrol-bombing-that-claimed-four-lives-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/655685\/","title":{"rendered":"Man and woman arrested over Waterford petrol bombing that claimed four lives \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two people have been arrested over the arson attack in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/waterford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/waterford\">Waterford<\/a> city that claimed the lives of four members of the English family on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The suspects, a man in his 20s and woman in her 30s, were detained on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They are suspected of facilitating a crime gang in relation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/10\/15\/waterford-family-murdered-by-gang-in-arson-attack-over-20000-drug-debt-son-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/10\/15\/waterford-family-murdered-by-gang-in-arson-attack-over-20000-drug-debt-son-says\/\">the arson attack at the house<\/a> on Birch Avenue, in the Birchwood estate. The arrests, which were anticipated, followed searches carried out across Waterford on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBoth individuals are currently detained under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 in a Garda station in the Garda Eastern region,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">Garda<\/a> said of Thursday\u2019s arrests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Both suspects can now be held for up to seven days without charge as they have been detained under legislation intended for use during the investigation of alleged serious organised crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A number of vehicles, phones and laptops have already been seized for examination. Garda\u00ed have been continuing to try to locate a female suspect and a vehicle of interest linked to the case in recent days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Philip and Kim English and two of their sons, Callum (12) and Jayden (9), were killed in the attack on their home. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their joint funerals are due to be held at the Sacred Heart Church, the Folly in Waterford on Monday, followed by burial at Kilbarry Cemetery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two other children \u2013 a girl (14) and a boy (6) \u2013 were rescued by firefighters and remain critically ill in Children\u2019s Health Ireland (CHI) Crumlin, Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">John James English, Philip English\u2019s adult son from his first marriage, said  he believes the drug debt behind the arson had been incurred by somebody else, not his father, and that it had reached \u20ac20,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The English family home had been targeted before, most recently in a petrol bombing last month.
